This article charts some of the issues which emerged when an Urdu word processing package was introduced into an urban primary school in southern England. Drawing on observation and interviews with teachers, parents and children over a period of 15 months, it maps teachers' initial expectations and what was actually achieved. The feudal family and the common law courts
A quartet of pleas protected rights of feudal wardship: quod reddat custodiam, ejectio custodie, ravishment and forfeiture of marriage. These actions are described primarily with a view to what they tell us about families experiencing a minority succession to their feudal estate. The paper argues that the manuscript pleadings on these cases give valuable insight not only to the remedies available at common law but reveal layers of English feudal …

Punishing convicted ravishers
Several thirteenth-century English statutes provided increasing sanctions for ravishment or abduction of wards and wives. The penalty for conviction as a ravisher came to include a term of “penal servitude”, as well as the payment of damages to the plaintiff and an amercement to the crown.
