Delusional States: Feeling Rule and Development in Pakistan'S Northern Frontier
Delusional States: Feeling Rule and Development in Pakistan's Northern Frontier is the first in-depth study of state power and social struggle in Gilgit-Baltistan - the only Shia-majority region of Sunni-dominated Pakistan and a contested border zone that forms part of disputed Kashmir. For seven decades, the political conflict over Kashmir has locked India and Pakistan in brutal wars and hate-centered nationalisms. This book illuminates how with…
Delusional States: Feeling Rule and Development in Pakistan's Northern Frontier
"Delusional States is the first in-depth study of state-making and social change in Gilgit-Baltistan, a Shia-majority region of Sunni-dominated Pakistan and a contested border area that forms part of disputed Kashmir. For over seven decades, the territorial conflict over Kashmir has locked India and Pakistan in brutal wars and hate-centred nationalisms. The book illuminates how within this story of hate lie other stories -- of love and betrayal, …

Poetry, Power, Protest: Reimagining Muslim Nationhood in Northern Pakistan
This article examines the role of poetry in illuminating and challenging the meaning of citizenship in the border region of Gilgit-Baltistan, which is located in the north of Pakistan and is internationally considered as forming part of Pakistani Kashmir. Ali discusses how poetic performances constitute a critical public arena for protesting political dispossession and for nurturing a postsectarian, religious harmony in the region. The article al…
Books vs Bombs? Humanitarian development and the narrative of terror in Northern Pakistan
This article examines the role of humanitarian discourse and development in reconfiguring the contemporary culture of empire and its war on terror. It takes as its point of entry the immensely popular biographical tale, Three Cups of Tea, which details how the American mountaineer Greg Mortenson has struggled to counter terrorism in Northern Pakistan through the creation of schools. Even as this text appears to provide a self-critical and humane …
Sectarian Imaginaries: The Micropolitics of Sectarianism and State-making in Northern Pakistan
The Gilgit region of Northern Pakistan has recently witnessed intense Shia-Sunni hostility after decades of communal harmony. This article uses the arena of secular education as a micropolitical site for examining this transformation, and for exploring how sectarian discord is experienced and reproduced in lived practice. Drawing upon three episodes of everyday sectarian tension, the article argues that a 'sectarian imaginary' - a normalized mode…

Outrageous State, Sectarianized Citizens: Deconstructing the 'Textbook Controversy' in the Northern Areas, Pakistan
This paper examines the ‘textbook controversy’ (2000-2005) that arose when the Pakistan state introduced new, overtly Sunni textbooks in the Northern Areas, and the local Shia population began to agitate for a more balanced curriculum. The conflict reached an acute stage during 2004-2005, as violent confrontations took place between Shia and Sunni communities, and a constant curfew paralyzed daily life in Gilgit for eleven months. I argue that th…
