  • Today, Tomorrow, and Overmorrow

Open Access•Katherine Williams, Katherine Steele et al.•ARTICLE•Open MIND•2025

English and German both have single words for yesterday and tomorrow, but German also includes the words vorgestern (“the day before yesterday”) and übermorgen (“the day after tomorrow”). This study investigates how these differences in time-word sets influence children’s learning of temporal language. In two tasks, English- and German-speaking children ages 3 to 7 (N = 304) and adult controls (N = 75), marked the locations of temporal terms on a…

  • The Benefits of Collaborative Popular Music Songwriting

    Open Access•Jan-Peter Herbst, Katherine Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Popular Music & Society•2024•References: 5

This article explores the often overlooked role of professional songwriters in popular music, who occupy the spectrum between craftspeople and artists. Drawing on seventeen episodes of the Sodajerker podcast featuring songwriters who write for and with popular artists, we outline the role of professional songwriters in the popular music industry and how collaboration between songwriters and artists shapes and refines songs. On this basis, we prop…

  • Women's engagement with the far right

    Open Access•Katherine Williams•ARTICLE•Religion Compass•2024•References: 48

The idea that women do not support the far right endures despite the contemporary resurgence and global electoral successes of the far right in its many guises. The aim of this article is to critically interrogate four dominant assumptions surrounding women's alleged lack of support for the far right and unpack whether they 'tell' researchers anything new about this support or merely consolidate existing blind spots in the scholarly literature on…

  • A Computational Model of Coupled Human Trust and Self-confidence Dynamics

Open Access•Katherine Williams, Katherine J Williams et al.•ARTICLE•ACM Transactions on Human-Robot…•2023

Autonomous systems that can assist humans with increasingly complex tasks are becoming ubiquitous. Moreover, it has been established that a human’s decision to rely on such systems is a function of both their trust in the system and their own self-confidence as it relates to executing the task of interest. Given that both under- and over-reliance on automation can pose significant risks to humans, there is motivation for developing autonomous sys…

  • Without making a song and dance about it

    Katherine Williams•ARTICLE•Jazz Research Journal•2022

This story can be read in three ways. The Story is a fictional day in the life of a female jazz guitarist. The Endnotes tell another story, a referenced timeline of discrimination and sexism against female and minority musicians. You could read The Story by itself. You could read The Endnotes by themselves—taken together, they form a prose story of some of the barriers faced by musicians outside the cishet male narrative. Thirdly, you could refer…

  • What Motivates Students About Open Pedagogy? Motivational Regulation Through the Lens of Self-Determination Theory

Open Access•Eric Werth, Katherine Williams•ARTICLE•The International Review of…•2021

Open pedagogy is growing in popularity as an instructional method to decentralize classroom power dynamics, engage students, and provide greater meaning to student work. To investigate the impact of open pedagogy on motivation, interviews were conducted with first-year college students at a four-year liberal arts college after completing a semester-long project based on this pedagogical approach. Student responses were assessed using self-determi…

  • A crosslinguistic study of the acquisition of time words in English- and German-speaking children

Katherine Williams, Katherine Steele et al.•ARTICLE•2021

Unlike English, German contains single words for “the day after tomorrow” (übermorgen) and “the day before yesterday” (vorgestern). How might these cross-linguistic differences influence children’s acquisition of time words? Prior work shows that English-speaking preschoolers learn the deictic status of time words (e.g., yesterday was in the past) long before learning their precise temporal locations (e.g., yesterday was exactly one day ago). Her…

  • The left digit effect in a complex judgment task

    Open Access•Andrea L Patalano, Katherine Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2021•References: 4

A left digit effect has been broadly observed across judgment and decision‐making contexts ranging from product evaluation to medical treatment decisions to number line estimation. For example, $3.00 is judged to be a much greater cost than $2.99, and “801” is estimated strikingly too far to the right of “798” on a number line. Although the consequences of the effects for judgment and decision behavior have been documented, the sources of the eff…

  • Environmental Factors Are Stronger Predictors of Primate Species’ Distributions Than Basic Biological Traits

    Open Access•Katherine Williams, Katherine A Williams et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•References: 66

Understanding the neutral, biological, and environmental processes driving species distributions is valuable in informing conservation efforts because it will help us predict how species will respond to changes in environmental conditions. Environmental processes affect species differently according to their biological traits, which determine how they interact with their environment. Therefore, functional, trait-based modeling approaches are cons…

It then considers society's response to crime. It shows how to carry out independent research and plan first steps in a career. The critical, applied approach is emphasized through some of the many features that are integrated throughout the book. These include conversations with authen…

  • Post-World War II Jazz in Britain

During this period, jazz was presented in a variety of ways in different venues, on four of which I focus: New Orleans-style jazz commonly performed for the same audiences in Rhythm Clubs and in concert halls (as shown by George Webb's Dixielanders at the Red Barn public house and the King's Hall); clubs hosting different styles of j…

Unfortunately, neither internal state nor international law has yet delivered a just system of dealing with these problems. Even when called to account punishment f…

  • Improvisation as Composition

    Katherine Williams•ARTICLE•Jazz Perspectives•2012

Since the beginning of Duke Ellington's career as composer and leader of his own jazz orchestra in the 1920s, a common critical theme has been the comparison with European art music composers such as Delius and Debussy. Assertions such as Constant Lambert's 1934 statement that Duke Ellington set a “standard by which we may judge ... highbrow composers” focused on the complex compositional devices in his output. Rather than restate these oft-cited…
