This Isn’t Happening, Right?”
This contribution examines the metapolitics of the New Right as satirized in Don’t Look Up (2021). It contextualizes the film’s warning about the global climate crisis (epitomized in the arrival of a planet killer comet) in the day and age of the Trump presidency with the film’s metafictional commentary on the uses of satire to move audiences and citizens to action. In particular, the article addresses the workings of satire as a genre after the …
Feeling Barbie
In Greta Gerwig's record-breaking blockbuster Barbie , feminism is popular and popular culture is feminist: the film engenders a plethora of commentary on the (feminist) present. It deploys a narrative of feminist generations as Barbie's quest for true womanhood (a vagina!) is set in motion by a mother-daughter conflict. The Calgary Stampede Through a Cultural Studies Perspective
This essay presents the conception, outline, and results of a cultural and literary studies graduate course held at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena and at the Calgary Stampede in 2013. Students of English and American Studies from Germany developed multimedia projects about 'Western' culture, and the Stampede as a Canadian sample of 'Westernness,' with a special interest in concepts of authenticity and spectacle. In the present contribu…
From Geisha girls to the Atomic Bomb Dome
This article shows that tourism development was a driving factor in the formation of Hiroshima memory culture from the start. By focusing on tourism, this article discusses a hitherto neglected aspect of public atomic bomb memory and raises criticism of area studies’ ongoing preoccupation with the nation which risks overlooking local as well as structural factors. Many aspects, such as postwar pacifism, can be explained from the perspective of to…
Ethik - Anerkennung - Gerechtigkeit
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum And Its Exhibition
This chapter reconstructs the history of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum ( Hiroshima Heiwa Kinen Shiryōkan ) and its exhibition from the days of its founding until today. The museum's history-telling and related discussions serve as a subtext to how the past was understood and how this understanding might have changed during the museum's existence. The different images of the past thereby testify for their respective presents. At the same tim…
