  • The impact of entrepreneurship research on other academic fields

Open Access•A Roy Thurik, David B Audretsch et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2024

The remarkable ascent of entrepreneurship witnessed as a scientific field over the last 4 decades has been made possible by entrepreneurship’s ability to absorb theories, paradigms, and methods from other fields such as economics, psychology, sociology, geography, and even biology. The respectability of entrepreneurship as an academic discipline is now evidenced by many other fields starting to borrow from the entrepreneurship view. In the presen…

    Open Access•Andrew Burke•ARTICLE•Screen•2020

Katherine Groo begins Bad Film Histories with a story of chance and serendipity. Having contacted the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in the hopes of acquiring a copy of Martin and Osa Johnson’s Simba: King of the Beasts (1928), she discovered when the DVD arrived that ‘it carried with it an unexpected surplus’ (p. 1). Accompanying Johnson’s work was an unidentified four-minute film shot in the Belgian Congo, consisting of a series of i…

    Andrew Burke•ARTICLE•Popular Music & Society•2014•References: 5

This article examines the music of VHS Head, whose abstract electronica is comprised primarily of samples drawn from a collection of VHS videocassettes. Drawing on cultural memory studies and thing theory, the article examines the significance of the videocassette as an uncanny residual object by considering the role it plays in the sound world created by VHS Head. The article begins by situating the music of VHS Head in relation to other contemp…

Open Access•Andrew Burke, Andrew E Burke et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2008

The article makes three contributions to the economics literature on entrepreneurship. We offer a new measure of entrepreneurship which accounts for variations in persistence in self-employment and as a result avoids the weakness of approaches which categorise an individual as an entrepreneur by observing their occupation at just one point in their career. We outline an econometric methodology to account for this approach and find, via a statisti…

  • Is there a North–South Divide in Self-employment in England

    Andrew Burke, Andrew E Burke et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 3

n Using decomposition analysis, the paper investigates why Northern England has fewer but higher performing self-employed individuals than the South. We find the causes are mainly structural differences rather than regional variation in individual characteristics. There are more self employed individuals in the South, but on average they create fewer jobs. Post compulsory education has a strong negative effect on the probability of self employmen…

  • Testing a Tool to Scale Quality of Life Indicators in Tanzania

Open Access•Alison Schwarzwalder, Zephania Chilangwa et al.•ARTICLE•CAM•2008•References: 9

A quality of life questionnaire utilizing scaled response codes is created for implementation in a predominantly rural African setting. The authors design a concrete tool using color as a semantic differential as a means to ease semantic shifts and enhance participant comprehension. Although they find a fairly even response distribution and no significant clustering among a sample of questions for which the tool is used, their interviewers report…

  • Bank Interest Margins and Business Start‐up Collateral

    Open Access•Andrew Burke, Aoife Hanley•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 18

The paper investigates the relationship between bank interest rate margins and collateral for loans issued to new ventures. The analysis finds a convex U‐shaped relationship. The results indicate that while provision of collateral initially reduces bank exposure to risk (through security, more optimal levels of capital and lower moral hazard among entrepreneurs) that beyond a point, the positive risk‐wealth association gives rise to greater risk …
