Advances in research on survey interview interaction
Although the past decade has shown enormous growth in the number of surveys conducted online, conducting surveys by means of telephone or face-to-face interviews is still a large research field. Es
Calendar Instruments in Retrospective Web Surveys
Calendar instruments incorporate aided recall techniques such as temporal landmarks and visual time lines that aim to reduce response error in retrospective surveys. Those calendar instruments have been used extensively in off-line research (e.g., computer-aided telephone interviews, computer assisted personal interviewing, and paper and pen interview) and have been shown to increase the quality of retrospectively collected life course data. The …

Linked Markov Sources
Many social processes are adaptive in the sense that the process changes as a result of previous outcomes. Data on such processes may come in the form of categorical time series. First, the authors propose a class of Markov Source models that embody such adaptation. Second, the authors discuss new methods to evaluate the fit of such models. Third, the authors apply these models and methods to data on a social process that is a preeminent example …
Do Interviewers' Voice Characteristics Influence Cooperation Rates in Telephone Surveys
Although telephone interviewing is one of the major data collection methods used in survey research and response rates have been declining for years, the effects of the interviewers’ voice characteristics on the cooperation of respondents have hardly been studied. The decision to participate in a telephone survey results from a complex of factors (Dillman, Gallegos, & Rencher, 1976; Groves & Couper, 1998; Groves & McGonnacle, 2001). Yet, the inte…

How to Measure the Agreement between Sequences
Some problems of optimal alignment procedures to measure the agreement between sequences are discussed. Hidden Markov models may be a new approach that is especially suited for grouping sequences that are more or less alike
Simulating response behavior in sociological survey interviews
The tenability of the model has been investigated by confronting the simulation outcomes with empirical data of Validity studies’. RESPONSE is a computer model which simulates response behavior of respondents in answering closed questions, posed in survey interviews. RESPONSE can be used to estimate true score distributions from the responses givea The main input variables are the ‘difficulty’ of the question (wording), the saliency of the questi…
Measuring the Agreement between Sequences
The present article proposes a new method to assess distances between sequences of states, belonging to, for instance, event histories. It is based on the number of moves needed to turn one sequence into another sequence. This number of moves is standardized by relating it to the number of moves needed to turn the sequence into its reverse. Weighting it in different manners by the number of common elements in both sequences yields three different…
Computers/Ordinateurs
The SEQUENCE program offers a wide range of procedures for the analysis of sequential data. In addition to usual kinds of analyses like lag-sequential analysis, the program is especially developed to answer questions with respect to the occurrence of particular patterns in sequences and the degree of similarity between different sequences
Effects of Measures Aimed At Increasing the Quality of Recall Data
Persuasion Strategies for Reducing Refusal Rates in Telephone Surveys
Types of Inadequate Interviewer Behaviour in Survey Interviews; Their Causes and Effects 1
Interviewing Style and Respondent Behavior
Guided by the model of the question-answer process as developed by Cannell and his coworkers, our main research question focused on how interviewers should behave in order to obtain adequate responses in survey interviews. A field experiment was conducted in which the interviewers adopted one of two behavioral styles, namely, a personal versus a formal style of interviewing. The dependent variables concerned measures of accuracy, social desirabil…
