  • Complexity leadership theory and fostering organizational adaptability

Open Access•Yashar Mahmud, Christina Evaldsson et al.•ARTICLE•Leadership•2026•Referencias: 15

In this article, we extend the understanding of enabling leadership in complexity leadership theory by showing what enables and stifles organizational adaptability. By drawing on a case study of an organizational change related to competence supply in health and care services, we explore what (enabling) leaders do, in the different (i.e. ideation and scaling) stages of an adaptive process, to engage the two complexity (i.e. the tension and the li…

  • What Drives First-Semester Student Engagement in Large Lecture-Based Sociology Courses in Germany

    Open Access•Aida Montenegro, Manuela Schmidt•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2025

Research on the complex dimensions of engagement in large, lecture-based courses remains scarce. Lecture-based courses are often characterized by passive learning environments, raising concerns about their capacity to foster motivation. This study investigates how motivational factors shape multiple dimensions of engagement—cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and agentic—in introductory sociology courses. A quantitative, cross-sectional survey was …

  • A path to a deliberate leadership development system

Open Access•Ingela Bergmo-Prvulovic, Gunilla Avby et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Continuing Education•2025

A leadership development system (LDS) encompasses all methods and practices used in an organisation to train and develop effective leadership. However, the underlying assumptions upon which such a system is based are often overlooked, and the workplace as a learning site is generally under-investigated, which may cause an unreflected LDS. Using a social representations theory approach, this study explores such underlying assumptions, i.e. social …

  • The Impact of Face Mask Usage on Data Quality in Face-to-face Interviews

    Open Access•Manuela Schmidt, Karoline R Estermann•ARTICLE•CAM•2025•Referencias: 19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, face-to-face surveys changed their mode of data collection due to contact restrictions and quarantine regulations. We report the experiences from the fifth wave of our panel in Cologne, Germany ( n = 915). Data collection took place after the peak of the pandemic (summer 2022), maintaining the face-to-face mode of previous waves, with 30% of participants opting for the interviewer to wear a face mask. We find that a …

  • Adolescent boys’ experiences of stress – a focus group study

    Open Access•Manuela Schmidt, Erika Hansson•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2024

Adolescent boys might need assistance in identifying stress and clearly voicing their specific concerns. They should also be provided with spaces that are free from stigmatization and judgement. Parents, teachers, and school nurses should be equipped with the appropriate tools and education on how to discuss stress and mental health in general with adolescent boys to prevent possible negative long-term consequences for both their physical and men…

  • Good food equals good health”

    Open Access•Erika Hansson, Manuela Schmidt•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Adolescent boys appeared to have a good understanding of food and healthy eating. They also experienced body positivity and seemed to have only minor issues regarding their weight. The primarily pathological perspective used to measure disordered eating among girls seems in need of revision to adhere to boys' thoughts and ideas regarding eating and weight

  • Achievement Goals, Student Engagement, and the Mediatory Role of Autonomy Support in Lecture-Based Courses

    Open Access•Aida Montenegro, Manuela Schmidt•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2023

What makes first-semester students stay engaged in non-mandatory lecture-based courses? This study aims to answer this question by analyzing the relationship between student engagement with autonomy support and achievement goals. Data gathered through self-reports from 340 students attending four introductory lecture-based courses at four German universities were used to test the following hypotheses: (1) students who pursue goals for self-improv…

  • German GPs’ Self-Perceived Role in the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Simon Kugai, Dorothea Wild et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

General practitioners (GPs) played a vital role during the COVID-19 pandemic. Little is known about GPs' view of their role, leadership, participation in regional services and preferences for future pandemic preparedness. This representative study of German GPs comprised a web-based survey and computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI). It addressed GPs' satisfaction with their role, self-perceived leadership (validated C-LEAD scale), partic…

  • Higher Work-Privacy Conflict and Lower Job Satisfaction in GP Leaders and Practice Assistants Working Full-Time Compared to Part-Time

Open Access•Julian Göbel, Manuela Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Background: Work-privacy conflict (WPC) has become an important issue for medical professionals. The cluster-randomized controlled IMPROVEjob study aimed at improving job satisfaction (primary outcome), with additional outcomes such as examining the work-privacy conflict in German general practice personnel. Using baseline data of this study, the relationship between work-privacy conflict and job satisfaction (JS) was analyzed. In addition, facto…

  • Job Satisfaction and Chronic Stress of General Practitioners and Their Teams

Open Access•Lukas Degen, Karen Linden et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Background : A high prevalence of poor job satisfaction and high chronic stress is documented for general practitioners (GPs) and non-physician practice staff from various countries. The reasons are multifactorial and include deficits in leadership, communication and workflows. This publicly funded study evaluates the effectiveness of the newly developed participatory, interdisciplinary, and multimodal IMPROVE job intervention on improving job sa…

  • Encounters with Persons Who Frequently Use Psychiatric Emergency Services

Open Access•Manuela Schmidt, Sigrid Stjernswärd et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Encounters and interactions between healthcare professionals and patients are central in healthcare services and delivery. Encountering persons who frequently use psychiatric emergency services (PES), a complex patient group in a complex context, may be particularly challenging for healthcare professionals. The aim of the study was to explore healthcare professionals' experiences of such encounters. Data were collected via individual interviews (…

  • Doctoral students’ well-being

    Open Access•Manuela Schmidt, Erika Hansson•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2018

PURPOSE: Doctoral student well-being is an important matter that shapes the well-being of academics throughout their careers. Given that well-being has been found to be closely related to employee productivity and efficiency, strategies associated with maintaining well-being during PhD studies might be crucial for higher education, its outcomes and-just as importantly-for a balanced life of PhD students. Method: Based on 17 studies, this literatu…

  • Spatial Knowledge Acquisition with Mobile Maps, Augmented Reality and Voice in the Context of GPS-based Pedestrian Navigation

Haosheng Huang, Manuela Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2012•Citada por: 6

GPS-based pedestrian navigation systems have become increasingly popular. Different interface technologies can be used to communicate/convey route directions to pedestrians. • Functional Analysis of the Primate Shoulder

    Open Access•Holger Preuschoft, Bianca Hohn et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2010•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 49

Studies of the shoulder girdle are in most cases restricted to morphological comparisons and rarely aim at elucidating function in a strictly biomechanical sense. To fill this gap, we investigated the basic functional conditions that occur in the shoulder joint and shoulder girdle of primates by means of mechanics. Because most of nonhuman primate locomotion is essentially quadrupedal walking-although on very variable substrates-our analysis star…

  • Gait parameter adjustments of cotton‐top tamarins ( Saguinus oedipus , Callitrichidae) to locomotion on inclined arboreal substrates

    Open Access•John A Nyakatura, Martin S Fischer et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2008•Citada por: 15•Referencias: 49

The influence of different substrate inclinations on gaits and metric gait parameters (relative forelimb and hind limb protraction, relative forelimb, and hind limb retraction, stride length, stance, and swing phase duration) of cotton‐top tamarin locomotion was studied using high‐speed video films and evaluated by descriptive and analytical statistical methods. As previously shown, lateral sequence gaits predominantly occurred on descending arbo…

  • Quadrupedal locomotion in squirrel monkeys (Cebidae

    Open Access•Manuela Schmidt•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2005•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 38

Quadrupedal locomotion of squirrel monkeys on small-diameter support was analyzed kinematically and kinetically to specify the timing between limb movements and substrate reaction forces. Limb kinematics was studied cineradiographically, and substrate reaction forces were synchronously recorded. Squirrel monkeys resemble most other quadrupedal primates in that they utilize a diagonal sequence/diagonal couplets gait when walking on small branches.…

  • Shoulder movements during quadrupedal locomotion in arboreal primates

Manuela Schmidt, Danja Voges et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•2002

The kinematics of scapula and shoulder joint movements were analyzed in three species of arboreal quadrupedal primates using cineradiography. Our findings indicate that scapular movement is highly important for forelimb movement in primates with this ancestral mode of locomotion. Retroversion of the scapula (syn. caudal rotation or extension) during the stance phase contributes more than 40% to the stride length of the forelimb. Lateral forelimb …

  • Cineradiographic study of forelimb movements during quadrupedal walking in the brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus, primates

Open Access•Manuela Schmidt, Martin S Fischer et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2000

Movements of forelimb joints and segments during walking in the brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus) were analyzed using cineradiography (150 frames/sec). Metric gait parameters, forelimb kinematics, and intralimb coordination are described. Calculation of contribution of segment displacements to stance propulsion shows that scapular retroversion in a fulcrum near the vertebral border causes more than 60% of propulsion. The contribution by the shoulder j…
