Deceased Parent in Distressing Dreams
This paper analyses three bereavement narratives in which adult daughters describe nightmarish after-death communication with a deceased parent. The narratives are approached with a narrative analysis in dialogue with psychological approaches to bereavement dreams and continuing bonds. In psychology, bereavement nightmares are usually assumed to signal difficulties accepting loss. However, in the context of bereavement narratives that depict life…
The Dead Amongst the Living
The dead are viewed as having agency in this world when they make a difference to our lives. This article explores the various forms of agency that the dead are felt to have. Also, it looks at the power relations between the living and the dead. The research is based on archived narratives and internet discussions produced in Finland in the 21st century. The dead can be felt to have intentional agency that either derives from the past when they w…

Painajaisen merkityksen muutos Suomessa
Kyseis…
Suomalaisten unet historian- ja perinteentutkimuksessa
Katsausartikkeli keskittyy unien tutkimuksen asemaan suomalaisen tieteen kentillä. Suomalainen lähdeaineisto mahdollistaa unien tutkimisen alkaen 1400-luvulla kirjatuista unikuvauksista, joita on siellä täällä osana hengel…
Vernakulaari verkossa
Blending the vernacular and esoteric
Finnish spiritualist and theosophical journals of 1905–20 brought esoteric teachings and vernacular belief traditions into dialogue with each other. Theosophical journals, in particular, released interpretations of Finnish mythology and the national epic the Kalevala, connecting them with the Ancient Wisdom. Both spiritualist and theosophical journals published belief narratives, which ranged from traditional migratory legends taking place in rur…
Discussing the Supernatural in Contemporary Finland
The supernatural is a debated issue on the Internet even though people generally avoid face-to-face discussion about it. This article 1 gives an analytical overview of discussions about the supernatural in contemporary Finland. The research material consists of a sample of Finnish media and online discussions about the supernatural, as well as letters describing and interpreting personal experiences. Texts published on different forums show diffe…
Conceptual Analysis and Variation in Belief Tradition
The article focuses on the popular conceptualisation of a death-related agent which is known in Finnish folk belief and narratives by the name churchyard-vki (vki means 'crowd', but also 'power' in Finnish). Natural conceptualisation is economical and distinctions are only made when found relevant enough. Verbal descriptions of churchyard-vki's appearance and actions towards people vary remarkably according to the narrative context. Rather than a…
