Strategies in Caring for Patients Living With Heart Failure in Rural Communities: A Systematic Review of the Literature
Heart failure (HF) is a chronic disease with increasing prevalence, with rural communities having HF worse outcomes and higher mortality. The aim of this systematic review is to consolidate and evaluate existing evidence for the outpatient management of chronic HF in rural-dwelling adults. A librarian assisted in the design and implementation of the search strategy. Overall, 14 studies met criteria and were included in this review, with 5 overarc…

International Public Finance and the Rise of Brazil: Comparing Brazil’s Use of Regionalism with Its Unilateralism and Bilateralism
Within the extensive literature on international regionalism, the more limited academic work done on regional financial organizations (RFOs) tends to assume that, by pooling resources to address such common international economic issues as development funding and financial crises, RFOs contribute to economic stability in their parts of the global landscape. Although South America has led the pack in creating such RFOs, their effectiveness is limi…
A Perilous Imbalance: The Globalization of Canadian Law and Governance
As citizens of a middle power, Canadians know how it feels to be objects of global forces. But they are also agents of globalization who have helped build structures of transnational governance that have highly uneven impacts on prosperity, human security, and the environment, often for the worse. This timely book argues that these imbalances need to be recognized and corrected. A Perilous Imbalance situates Canada's experience of globalization i…
Smart Borders and the Rise of Bilateralism: The Constrained Hegemonification of North Americaa after September 11
Stephen Clarkson, Smart Borders and the Rise of Bilateralism: The Constrained Hegemonification of North Americaa after September 11, International Journal, Vol. 61, No. 3, North American Security and Prosperity: Annual John W. Holmes Issue on Canadian Foreign Policy (Summer, 2006), pp. 588-609
Smart Borders and the Rise of Bilateralism: The Constrained Hegemonification of North America after September 11
INTRODUCTIONThe consolidation of multistate regions is one of the most interesting features of globalization's recent past. The European Union may be by far the most advanced example of this phenomenon, but America, including as it does the global hegemon, is surely no less important.Linguistic markersThis special issue takes as its premise the notion that comprises not just the United States and Canada, as it used to, but also Mexico. This is no…
Congruence, Conflict, and Continental Governance: Canada's and Mexico's Responses to Paradigm Shift in the United States
The context for this study is a broader inquiry into continental governance under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in which three approaches have yielded relatively meager evidence of an emerging transnational political reality. Continentalism from above falters due to NAFTA's institutional deficit. Continentalism from below has produced little lasting solidarity among the major civil society organizations. Meanwhile, continentalis…
Governing under Stress: Middle Powers and the Challenge of Globalization
This volume is the first work to emerge from a major international comparative research project exploring the political economy of globalization. This inter-disciplinary team of scholars is focusing on the semi-periphery of world power. Whether defined in social, cultural, economic or simply spatial terms, ‘semi-peripheral’ countries share two qualities: they are conscious of their subordination to the hegemonic powers at the centre of the global…

Locked In? Canada's External Constitution under Global Trade Governance
The negotiation of supranational trade regimes may well be considered by historians as one of the most pregnant developments which brought the twentieth century to a highly polarized close. At one pole, the specialized community of trade experts hailed the treaties that set up global and continental institutions as giant steps forward in establishing the universal rule of economic law, with a direct, trade- and investment-expanding impact on the …
The multi-level state: Canada in the semi-periphery of both continentalism and globalization
This article looks at an old subject (the state of the state) under new conditions (accelerating globalization and fragmentation), using Canada as the case in point. My first concern is linguistic: such labels as 'post-Keynesian', 'post-welfare', and even 'post-national' tell us more about what the state may have been than what it has become. These 'post-' categories do not capture the extent to which governmental functions have been redistribute…

Canada: An American Nation? Essays on Continentalism, Identity, and the Canadian Frame of Mind
Are Canadians so influenced by the United States that they lack a distinct identity? This question has preoccupied Canadians and Canadianists for years. Canada - An American Nation? is a compilation of Allan Smith's essays on the influence of American society on Canadian identity. Based on the notion that Canada can best be understood if viewed in relation to the United States, the book explores the ways in which American influences have challeng…

Barriers to Entry of Parties into Toronto's Civic Politics: Towards a Theory of Party Penetration
Simulation in Teaching Comparative Politics: Playing French Games
Many practitioners of political science are currently questioning the bona fides of comparative politics as a valid academic subdiscipline in their trade. At the same time, in trying to perform comparative politics in the classroom over a period of five years, I have found the standard, multi-country comparative politics course to be increasingly unsatisfactory as a component of the political science curriculum. Many factors combine to make it ex…
