  • Guidance for Physicians Who Wish to Influence Policy Development on Determination of Death by Neurologic Criteria

Open Access•Michael A Rubin, Michael Rubin•ARTICLE•The AMA Journal of Ethic•2020

Physicians have a long-standing obligation to consider social implications of their practice and its potential influences on health policy. One example of a practice's influence on policy is determining death by neurologic criteria. By lobbying policymakers, maintaining their diagnostic skills, participating in national medical societies, and contributing to robust discourse, physicians can positively influence practice and policy about death det…

  • What to Do When There Aren't Enough Beds in the Picu

Open Access•Michael A Rubin, Michael Rubin et al.•ARTICLE•The AMA Journal of Ethic•2017

The concepts of medical futility and rationing are often misunderstood and lead to significant consternation when resources are stretched and pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) beds are unavailable. While the two concepts overlap, each has its own distinct application and moral justification. Most importantly, we should avoid using one to justify the other. Bioethics professionals should assist critical care clinicians in clarifying when each r…

    Michael A Rubin, Michael Rubin•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2016

  • Normatively Enriched Moral Meta‐Semantics

    Open Access•Michael Rubin, Michael H Rubin•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Phenomenological…•2015•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 6

In order to defend the Cornell variety of naturalistic moral realism from Horgan and Timmons’ Moral Twin Earth objection, several philosophers have proposed what I call Normatively Enriched Moral Meta‐Semantics (NEMMS). According to NEMMS, the natural properties that serve as the contents of moral predicates are fixed (at least in part) by non‐moral normative facts. In this paper, I elucidate two versions of NEMMS: one proposed by David Brink, an…

  • Reducing Time-dependent Bias in Estimates of the Attributable Cost of Health Care–associated Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus Infections

    Richard E Nelson, Matthew H Samore et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Care•2015•Referencias: 25

BACKGROUND: Previous estimates of the excess costs due to health care-associated infection (HAI) have scarcely addressed the issue of time-dependent bias. OBJECTIVE: We examined time-dependent bias by estimating the health care costs attributable to an HAI due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) using a unique dataset in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that makes it possible to distinguish between costs that occurred bef…

  • On Two Responses to Moral Twin Earth

    Open Access•Michael Rubin, Michael H Rubin•ARTICLE•Theoria•2014

T erence H organ and M ark T immons's M oral T win E arth thought experiment poses a serious challenge for an influential kind of moral realism. It presents us with a case in which it is intuitive that two speakers are expressing a substantive disagreement with one another. However, the meta‐semantics associated with this relevant form of moral realism entails that the speakers' moral predicates express different semantic contents, and thus, the …

  • Are Kurds a Pariah Minority

    Michael A Rubin, Michael Rubin•ARTICLE•Social research•2003•Citada por: 2

KURDS invariably greet visitors to "Kurdistan" with a cup of sweet tea and the complaint that they are "the largest people without a nation." They are right. Approximately 24 million Kurds are spread across Turkey, Iran, Syria, Iran, and the countries of the Caucasus. While the Kurds are the fourth-largest ethnic group in the Middle East (after Arabs, Persians, and Turks), they remain destined to be a minority spread among nations.1 But are they …
