  • Reducing maternal smoking using Indigenous knowledge, practices, and online technologies

Open Access•Patrick Salmon, Teresa Naseba Marsh et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnicity in Substance…•2025

Maternal smoking increases adverse risks for both the mother's pregnancy and the unborn child and remains disproportionately high among some Indigenous peoples. Decreasing smoking among pregnant Indigenous women has been identified as a health priority in New Zealand because of wide inequities in smoking-related harms. Using pre- and post-intervention questionnaires, this feasibility study assessed the acceptability and potential efficacy of a no…

  • Aryo Makko. Ambassadors of Realpolitik: Sweden, the CSCE and the Cold War

    Patrick Salmon•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2019

In Ambassadors of Realpolitik: Sweden, the CSCE and the Cold War, Aryo Makko paints a picture of Swedish foreign policy in the early 1970s that is sharply at odds with the way in which Sweden was generally viewed at the time: as an idealistic champion of internationalism and radical causes—an image personified by Prime Minister Olof Palme with his well-publicized criticism of U.S. policy in Vietnam. Instead, Makko portrays a Sweden still guided b…

Gill Bennett, Patrick Salmon•BOOK•European Recovery and the Search…•2016

This volume documents the British Government’s response from mid-1946 to early 1948 to the twin challenges of economic recovery and the search for a meaningful Western security framework in the face of the increasing polarisation of Europe into Eastern and Western spheres of influence. Although relations between the wartime Big Three allies, the UK, US and USSR, had begun to fracture even before the end of hostilities in 1945, it was during 1947 …

Tony Insall, Patrick Salmon•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of History•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article is based on the preface to the DBPO volume. It describes some of the background to the events which are illustrated by the documents included in the volume. The end of the Second World War brought hopes of building a new society in Europe. These documents reveal the nature of Foreign Office concerns about the range of problems, both multilateral and bilateral, which still remained to be resolved in the Nordic area, and describe the e…

This is a study of commercial diplomacy which investigates the responses of British industry and government to foreign competition, sectoral depression and decline. It examines the attitude of the British iron and steel industry towards the cartel of the continental steel industries, and the attempt of the Lancashire cotton industry in 1932-34 to reach a market-sharing agreement with Japan. It is unsigned and undated, but was printed for internal circulation on 24 June 1908 and may thus form part of the work undertaken by the Naval Intelligence Division and the Naval War College in 1908–9 rather than the better-known deliberations of the ‘Ballard Committee’ of 1906–7. …

Swedish iron ore occupies a special place in both the history of the first months of the Second World War, and the scholarly debate on the character of the German war economy. Schemes for diplomatic, naval or military action in Scandinavia all more or less ineffectual dominated the strategy of Britain and France in the winter of 1939-40. Though given impetus and a pretext by the outbreak of the Soviet-Finnish Winter War in November 1939, these pl…
