Intellectuals and Left Politics in Uruguay, 1958 - 2006: Frustrated Dialogue
The relationship of intellectuals to political power has been an important theme since ancient times. It is no less so today and has been an increasing focus of culture studies, especially in the Latin American context, where the history of democratic governance has been spotty at best. The plague of repression that Latin America experienced in the 1960s and 1970s also engulfed Uruguay, the country with the most democratic political culture in La…
La economía política del Uruguay contemporáneo, 1870 - 2000
Henry Finch first came to Uruguay in the late 1960s and personally experienced the acceleration of the long economic decline that would help propel the country into dictatorship. His study of the political economy of Uruguay from 1870 to 1970 was published in 1982 and would prove to be one of the best works written by a foreigner on that subject. The volume under review here is a new edition of that book and includes two new chapters: one on the …
The Origins of Argentina's Revolution of the Right
This volume, as arcane as it first appears, addresses two of the major themes (neither of them new) that dominate the contemporary analysis of Argentine politics. The first is the failure to fulfill the country’s economic and social promise, which was so bright during the first three decades of the twentieth century. The second is the Left’s electoral insignificance. Alberto Spektorowski’s book gives us insight into both of these issues. However,…
Diversidad partidaria y dictaduras: Argentina, Brasil y UruguayEl maremoto militar y el archipiélago partidario: testimonios para la historia reciente de los partidos políticos uruguayos
The plague of repression that swept through Latin America in the 1960s and the 1970s left virtually no political system untouched. Even countries such as Chile and Uruguay that had a history of democratic regimes succumbed to military dictatorship. In the two volumes reviewed here, Silvia Dutrénit Bielous, an Uruguayan historian working in Mexico, offers two very different approaches to examine the relationship between the military and political …

Teaching Group Treatment in Doctoral Programs for Counseling Psychology
We surveyed the 71 doctoral programs in counseling psychology approved by the American Psychological Association to examine whether and how group counseling or therapy was taught. Responses from 31 programs listed at least one graduate course in group counseling; over half offered more than one. In most cases the introductory course was required. Analysis also indicated that introductory courses often included an in-class or an out-of-class exper…
Academic Training in Group Psychotherapy in Clinical Psychology Doctoral Programs
We surveyed 185 clinical psychology doctoral programs accredited by the American Psychological Association to examine whether and how group psychotherapy was taught. While respondents of all Psy.D: programs to the survey offered a course in group psychotherapy, less than one-third of Ph.D. programs offered one. Among programs that offered a course in group psychotherapy, less than half required that students take it. Most instructors had an in-cl…

Cuban Studies Since the Revolution
In recent years, few countries have generated so much debate and controversy as Cuba. Since the Cuban Revolution of 1959, discussions have been characterized by polemics. A comprehensive discourse on the epistemology of Cuban studies, this work evaluates the key areas of inquiry and research in the field, documenting the unresolved issues and offering points of departure for future study of Cuba. Leading Cuban specialists address the disciplines …
Pet Ownership in Relation to Depression, Anxiety, and Anger in Working Women
Research has shown that certain populations such as nursing home patients and physically ill patients have benefited psychologically from pet ownership. Recent studies have indicated that the relationship between pet ownership and well-being may be complex. We examined the relationship between pet ownership and emotional distress among working women. We also studied the relationship between pet attachment and emotional distress. Participants were…
