Special Section: Keywords: A Window into China's Governance of Its Inner Asian Borderlands
Keywords' were, in eighteenth-century English, terms that allowed the solution of a code or cypher -they literally unlocked a conundrum.By the mid-nineteenth century, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, they had acquired a more general use, designating a term or concept that explained or summarised a larger set of ideas -'a word, expression, or concept of particular importance or significance' .In 1976, when Raymond Williams published his…

Conflicting Memories: Tibetan History under Mao Retold
Conflicting Memories is a study of how the Tibetan encounter with the Chinese state during the Maoist era has been recalled and reimagined by Chinese and Tibetan authors and artists since the late 1970s. Written by a team of historians, anthropologists, and scholars of religion, literature and culture, it examines official histories, biographies, memoirs, and films as well as oral testimonies, fiction, and writings by Buddhist adepts. The book in…
DV-Made China: Digital Subjects and Social Transformations after Independent Film
In 1990s post-Reform China, a growing number of people armed with video cameras poured out upon the Chinese landscape to both observe and contribute to the social changes then underway. Happening upon the crucial platform of an older independent film movement, this digital turn has given us a "DV China" that includes film and media communities across different social strata and disenfranchised groups, including ethnic and religious minorities and…
Imagining the borderlands: Managing (to prolong) conflict in Tibet
The current phase of political conflict in Tibet began with pro‐independence protests in the late 1980s and saw a significant surge of unrest in 2008. But that unrest was not continuous and for much of the last 25 years was at a low level of intensity. Yet the Chinese authorities have categorised the situation in Tibet as a ‘life‐and‐death struggle’ against pro‐independence forces throughout this period. This paper notes earlier debates in Chines…

Notes on Contemporary Ransom Rituals in Lhasa
The glud gtor practice followed in Lhasa brings with it a complex web of popular beliefs, practices and questions about social meaning and modernity, some of which are sketched out in this chapter. The chapter reviews the existing literature on ransom rituals, already familiar to scholars, and offers initial observations on the contemporary practice in Lhasa today. The glud gtor is not a single practice, but part of a vast array of rituals which …
Restrictions and Their Anomalies: The Third Forum and the Regulation of Religion in Tibet
In 1994, at a meeting known as the Third Forum on Tibet Work, the Chinese authorities announced a series of restrictions on religious practice in the Tibetan Autonomous Region. Described by many outsiders in terms of abuses of rights, in fact those measures differed in important ways. By analysing the target, rationale and procedure of these restrictions, it becomes clear that some were relatively routine, while others were anomalous – their purp…
Younghusband Redux: Chinese Dramatisations of the British Invasion of Tibet
A film, a television series, four plays and an opera have been produced in China since 1997 dramatising the invasion of Tibet by the British in 1903 04. These works were part of an official effort to enhance patriotic spirit among Chinese and Tibetan people through historical example, as well as an attempt to represent Tibetans as participants in a broader Chinese resistance to Western aggression and humiliation. They coincided with an official c…

Understated Legacies: Uses of Oral History and Tibetan Studies
This paper aims to stimulate discussion about the complexity of oral history as a practice by recalling its origins and early associations, such as criminal confessions, war-reporting, the novel, exotic art and other early forms of first-person narratives, and by tracing some of their recurrent echoes in contemporary work. It looks at some of the uses to which oral history or related practices have been put in the field of Tibetan studies, rangin…

Language and Ethnicity: Cadre-Speak in Contemporary Tibet
The paper looks at changes over time in the ways that leading nationality cadres use formalistic language conventions within a communist society to convey apparently heterodox opinions. It notes in particular how those changes are related to economic and developmental conditions. These produce shifts in meanings as a side-effect of changes in the relationships that nationality or religious leaders have with the state, so that what might look to o…
Tsogt Taij and the Disappearance of the Overlord: Triangular Relations in Three Inner Asian Films
Three major history films were produced in Mongolia and Tibet in the socialist era that dealt with the role of earlier Chinese dynasties in those areas. Two of the films - Tsogt Taij (1945) and Budala gong mishi (1989) - portray events in Tibet in the seventeenth century and include portrayals of the Fifth Dalai Lama and the Mongolian leader, Gushri Khan. The third film, Mandukhai setsen khatun (1989), deals with fifteenth century history in Mong…

The Secret Secret: Cinema, Ethnicity and Seventeenth Century Tibetan-Mongolian Relations
The Secret History of the Potala Palace, a 1989 film about Mongol-Tibetan relations in the seventeenth century, was a milestone in the still tentative development of Tibetan film, with significant Tibetan participation and close attention to Tibetan sources of history. This paper suggests possible reasons for the withdrawal of the film from circulation, and proposes ways of reading film in the context of contested versions of ethnicity
