  • Reforming the bifurcated process under section 38 of the Canada Evidence Act

John Norris•ARTICLE•University of Toronto Law Journal•2018

Objections to the disclosure of information under section 38 of the Canada Evidence Act must be adjudicated in the first instance by the Federal Court even when they arise in proceedings before other courts or tribunals. This bifurcated process has come under serious criticism as inefficient and ineffective, especially in relation to criminal proceedings. This article examines the principal concerns that have been raised about the bifurcated proc…

  • Task‐Based Language Teaching

Open Access•Martin Bygate, John Norris et al.•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2015

Task‐based language teaching (TBLT) is an approach to pedagogy in which communication tasks are fundamental to language learning. In TBLT, the notion of task indicates language‐learning activities in which students are required to use language with a primary focus on meaning, in order to achieve some communicative outcome. They range in scope from brief spoken exchanges to extended written performances to integrated, multimodal language use in fa…

  • Farm Workers and the Churches

    John Norris•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2011•Cited by: 1

The primary focus of Alan J. Watt's Farm Workers and the Churches is how religion—both institutional and popular—influenced the effort to organize farm workers in California and the lower Rio Grande valley of Texas. Watt begins by tracing the development of the Catholic Church and Protestant denominations in the two states in the aftermath of the 1846–1848 conflict with Mexico. The Catholic Church in both areas was rather weak and spent much of t…

  • On-the-Job Tasks and Performance Pay

Open Access•Vera Brenčič, John Brian Norris et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2010•References: 21

Drawing on a dataset of job openings posted at an online job board, the authors find that employers are less likely to offer performance-based pay when a job entails multitasking, quality control, or team work than when a job does not entail these tasks. This finding is consistent with the notion that when employers have difficulty measuring a worker's overall performance at jobs with these dimensions, they offer weaker performance incentives to …

  • Benedict Arnold's Plan for Privateering, 1782

John Norris, John M Norris•ARTICLE•The William and Mary Quarterly•1956

HE two documents printed below' give an interesting sidelight on Benedict Arnold's fortunes and state of mind after his return from James River Expedition, his last regular military employment. With his restless, ambitious Yankee mind endlessly producing great schemes for his advancement, based on someone else's money, he could not long remain content with role of a British brigadier-general on half-pay. He turned to his first trade, sea, and evo…
