  • Fragmentos de discursos de um cotidiano racializado

Open Access•Vanise Gomes De Medeiros, André Cavalcante•ARTICLE•Revista Letras•2023

  • O real e a metáfora

Open Access•André Cavalcante, Vanise Gomes De Medeiros•ARTICLE•RUA•2020

  • Tumbling Into Queer Utopias and Vortexes

André Cavalcante, André Mendes Cavalcante•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•2019•Cited by: 27•References: 31

Drawing on one year of fieldwork with LGBTQ youth, I explore the ways Tumblr, a microblogging and social networking site, has become a vibrant center of queer discourse and collectivity. I argue that for LGBTQ users, Tumblr simultaneously generates the specter of a "queer utopia"-a space where queer potential flourishes and more expansive ways to think about the future materialize-and queer "vortextuality"-an experience of being sucked into an on…

  • Affect, emotion, and media audiences

    Open Access•André Cavalcante, André Mendes Cavalcante•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 37

In this article, I place qualitative audience research in conversation with theories of affect. Informed by participant data from two qualitative audience studies I have conducted with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) audiences in the United States, I illustrate how cultural representations can make significant demands on one’s emotional and affective life, requiring practices of rest, rebuilding, and reclamation. I call thi…

  • Feminist reception studies in a post-audience age

André Cavalcante, André Mendes Cavalcante et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Media Studies•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 13

Joke O. K. E. Hermes recently wrote that “Qualitative audience studies have arguably been the best possible expression of feminist engagement in media studies” (2014, 61). It was the recognition th

  • Breaking Into Transgender Life

    Open Access•André Cavalcante, André Mendes Cavalcante•ARTICLE•Communication Culture and Critique•2017•Cited by: 8•References: 2

Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork with transgender individuals and communities, this article explores transgender audiences' interactions with what I call “breakout texts,” media that portray “first of its kind” representation. I analyze the films Boys Don't Cry (1999) and TransAmerica (2005) as transgender breakout texts, or media that break into the cultural mainstream, break with historical representational paradigms, and break into the ever…
