The Eighteenth-Century Hôtel Particulier
This article examines discussions of Parisian hôtels particuliers (townhomes) in eighteenth-century texts on architecture and mœurs (mores). It focuses on how exterior decoration was used to comment on the social order and on the relationship between public and private and shows how both were undergoing transformations in the eighteenth century. Exterior decoration meant to indicate the rank of the inhabitant was increasingly obscured by the prac…
Pandialectal Learning
In March 2020, Georgia schools suddenly transitioned to online learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic—a week before the authors were to begin a Global Englishes curriculum in a 10th-grade classroom. This abrupt shift introduced many unknowns, including how the material would transition to a teleschool format and how well the students would handle the content and activities during such a tumultuous time
Allan Potofsky, Constructing Paris in the Age of Revolution
Les Halles de Paris et leur quartier (1137-1969)
Medievalist Anne Lombard-Jourdan takes a long perspective on the history of the Halles, depicting it as a dynamic commercial agglomeration and a stable anchor in central Paris. Jourdan passed away shortly after the book’s publication at the age of 101. As one might expect from a scholar with a long and illustrious career, this book is a gem; it is deeply researched, thoughtfully argued, and written with a lively style that brings the medieval Hal…
Foreign bodies
This article analyses British-authored travel accounts to Paris during the period 1789–1830 in the context of shifting attitudes toward the body, the emotions, and national identity. The study argues that in the early nineteenth century, as discourses of national identity that were established over the course of the eighteenth century were gravely undermined by the upheavals of Revolution and war, travel served to destabilise categories of identi…

Family Likeness
Literary scholar Mary Jean Corbett here challenges conventional readings of the exogamous marriage plot in nineteenth-century British fiction by focusing on ‘a cultural tendency toward forging relationships with familial and familiar figures’ (p. vii). In chapters dedicated to novels by Jane Austen, Harriet Martineau, Felicia Skene, Charlotte Brontë, George Eliot, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Virginia Woolf, Corbett argues that the tendency of critics …
Death and the noble body in Medieval England
Knowing Paris
While Parisian guidebooks published in the second half of the eighteenth century have often been seen as part of an effort to render the city more legible, this essay argues that the use of different aesthetic styles to describe the city as well as the proliferation of organizational formats created a measure of confusion over the meaning of the city and exposed tensions between systems of rendering the city meaningful. These tensions became poli…

Working Within the Crisis
Between Women
Women in Nineteenth-Century Europe
During the nineteenth century, European women experienced dramatic and enduring changes in their familial, working and political lives. Breaking away from traditional categories, the authors of this book provide a sense of the variety and complexity of women's lives across national and regional boundaries, juxtaposing the experiences of women with their perceptions of their lives. Three themes unite this study: the tension between tradition and m…
"Telling "Spatial Stories
Urban Renovation, Moral Regeneration
During the Second Empire, Emperor Napoleon III and prefect of the Seine Haussmann attempted to create a more splendid, more hygienic, and more secure Paris. In the 1850s and 1860s, old neighborhoods were demolished and replaced by broad thoroughfares, luxury housing, parks and open squares, and new centers for leisure and commerce.1 In his 1874 study of Parisian social life, customs, and institutions, writer and journalist Maxime DuCamp reflected…
