Richard Parish (1948-2022)
It is difficult to envisage the field of French studies without Richard Parish. Not only did he serve the discipline with distinction as a member of the Editorial Board of French Studies and as Chair of the Society for Early Modern French Studies, but his forty years as Tutor in French at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, mean that he oversaw the tuition of several generations of undergraduates and graduates both at his college and more widely in t…

Striking the Air
The sounds of early modern Paris are first explored through poetic and satirical depictions of urban noise, with emphasis placed on the disruption that they present. The attempt by Louis XIV to assert his absolute power becomes manifest in the means employed to control and contain those sounds deemed to be potentially subversive and seditious, especially in the threat posed by performers of songs on the Pont-Neuf, which was one of the few public …

Pascal et Arnauld
By Michel Le Guern. Paris, Champion, 2003. 239 pp. Hb €45.00. This book gives a very successful account of the often complex relationship between Antoine Arnauld and Blaise Pascal. The Miracle That Was Macedonia
Recent discoveries have thrown new light on the extent and influence of Macedonian civilization, including their pioneering skills in painting, jewellery, metalwork and architecture. Professor Hammon - who was the first scholar to identify the ancient Macedonian capital at Vergina - here describes the origins and development of Macedonia from a tiny area to the civilization which expended under the rule of Alexander the Great and his successors
The Relations of Illyrian Albania with the Greeks and the Romans
In 1931 I photographed some nomadic Vlach shepherds at Chaliki near the source of the river Achelous. Two leaders — called Tschelni-kadzi — held each between his knees a fine ram, his greatest possession, on which the increase of the flock depended. They wore homespun clothing and a heavy cloak (kappa) of mixed goathair and sheep-wool. As a contrast to them I cite a gravestone relief of c. AD 200, which shows two smiths working what is probably i…
