Women Writing Antiquity
Women Writing Antiquity argues that the struggle to define the female intellectual in seventeenth-century France lay at the centre of a broader struggle over the definition of literature and literary knowledge during a time of significant cultural change. As the female intellectual became a figure of debate, France was also undergoing a shift away from the dominance of classical cultural models, the transition towards a standardised modern langua…
Ovid in French
This collection of essays examines the ways Ovid’s diverse œuvre has been translated, rewritten, adapted, and responded to by a range of French and francophone women from the Renaissance to the present. It aims to reveal lesser-known voices in Ovidian reception studies, and to offer a wider historical perspective on the complex question of Ovid and gender. Ranging from Renaissance poetry to contemporary creative-criticism, it charts an understudi…
État présent
The Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns, or to use its French name, la querelle des Anciens et des Modernes,1 has been the subject of sustained interest in the past couple of decades since the publication of Joan DeJean’s important work, Ancients against Moderns: Culture Wars and the Making of a Fin de Siècle, which will be the starting point of this état présent.2 The Quarrel ‘proper’ refers to two historical moments in the late seventeenth and …
Translating Ovid
This chapter treats two fictional versions— histoires galantes —of the story of Ovid’s life: Madame de Villedieu’s Les Exilez de la cour d’Auguste (1672–8) and Anne de la Roche-Guilhen’s Histoire des Favorites (1697). It develops two main arguments: first that Ovid’s sociable love poetry, and his avowed use of a pseudonym for his mistress, made him appeal to a female-orientated literary culture and à clé reading and writing practices. To support …
The Lives of Ovid in Seventeenth-Century French Culture
Seventeenth-century France saw one of the most significant ‘culture wars’ Europe has ever known. Culminating in the Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns, this was a confrontational, transitional time for the reception of the classics. This study explores responses to the life of the ancient Roman poet, Ovid, within this charged atmosphere. To date, criticism has focused on the reception of Ovid’s enormously influential work in this period, but lit…
Ancients, Moderns, Gender
This article examines the relationship between the Querelle des anciens et des modernes and the Querelle des femmes as it was articulated in 'Le Parnasse reconnoissant, ou, Le triomphe de Madame Des-Houlières' by Marie-Jeanne L'Héritier. Published in 1694 as a riposte to Boileau's misogynist Satire x , the text contributes to the tradition of defences of women. However, L'Héritier deliberately inserts her rejoinder into the Querelle des anciens e…
