Writing the World with Michaël Ferrier
Writing the World with Micha€ el FerrierPour comprendre la France, il est n ecessaire de passer par d'autres pays.Il faut aller voir ailleurs pour comprendre ce qu'est la France.-Micha€ el Ferrier, M emoires d'outre-merWhen there is enough out-of-placeness in the world, nothing is out of place.-Don DeLillo, Mao II Micha€ el Ferrier describes himself, in an academic context, as "a French writer, novelist and essayist."But for anyone who has read h…
Interworlds and Inter-Identities in Mémoires d’outre-mer and Scrabble
Mémoires d’outre-mer and Scrabble, a biography of Ferrier’s paternal grandfather and an autobiographical account of Ferrier’s childhood respectively, are two quite different works from the point of view of structure, setting and characters. But I propose to analyse them together in this article because I believe they have much in common; a particular attitude towards the natural world, a non-standard view of space and time as well as of human ide…
Scatter and resist Ferrier writing Fukushima
This article explores the many ways in which Michaël Ferrier, novelist, academic, and essayist, writes about the triple disaster, known in the west as ‘Fukushima’, that struck Japan on 11 March 2011. He travelled up to the stricken area from Tokyo and wrote a witness account of his experiences, Fukushima: récit d’un désastre [‘Fukushima, Account of a Disaster’] (2012). During the ten years since Ferrier has continued to write prolifically about t…
Calligraphy or Photography? Representations of the City in Michaël Ferrier’s Tokyo, petits portraits de l’aube
This article examines Michael Ferrier’s ‘La chambre du fond : quatre essais de kanjis malgre la nuit’, one chapter of his Tokyo, petits portraits de l’aube, as an instance of a writing which positions itself against an ‘ecriture photographique’ – as defined by writers such as Herve Guibert or Annie Ernaux – and models itself instead on Japanese calligraphy. I argue that Ferrier thus effects an instance of ‘aesthetic translation’ (Pamela A. Genova…
Time Travelling in Ernaux's Mémoire de fille
Annie Ernaux’s universally acclaimed Les Années was published in 2008, and crowned by three prizes that year: the Prix Marguerite Duras, the Prix François Mauriac de la Région Aquitaine, and the Prix de la langue française. It was quickly followed by L’Autre fille (2009), a slim but poignant book about the sister who was born and died before her, and L’Atelier noir (2011), another brief but fascinating work comprised of extracts from her ‘work’ d…
Annie Ernaux's 'Proof of Life
L'Usage de la photo (2005) is the portrait of a unique year in Annie Ernaux's life when she was having a passionate affair as well as undergoing treatment for breast cancer. This article will explore how L'Usage de la photo , which is made up of texts and photographs by Ernaux and her partner Marc Marie, is both a representation and a proof : I shall argue that Ernaux insists on a referential link between her text and reality in this work, making…
Nathalie Sarraute's Accent
This article explores the basis for Nathalie Sarraute's insistence that her work be classified as poetry rather than prose. The article shows that the roots of this preference can be found in her theoretical writings, which are put into practice in her creative works. Their ‘poetic’ quality is analysed using the tools of prosody, specifically on extracts from her collection of prose poems, Tropismes . This exercise throws up interesting theoretic…
