The Fiction of Diderot and Rousseau
Diderot and Rousseau were friends and then enemies, and they were also both major writers of the Enlightenment. They argued that human nature should be understood and valued, and they argued against anything that constrained it, as they considered that all suffering was destructive. Fiction was part of their argumentative arsenal, and perhaps even the tool they felt was most effective, as it works through the imagination on the emotions. 'Natural…
Pre-Romantic French Thought
This chapter explores what is at stake for supposedly ‘pre-romantic’ thinkers in France, and try to understand what ‘pre-romanticism’ is. It argues that many of the most resonant themes associated with Romanticism, already compellingly and unflinchingly explored by Diderot, It requires us to abandon the familiar models of straightforward transmission and influence which we can fruitfully use in the case of Rousseau, because with Diderot we simply…

From pre-normal to abnormal: The emergence of a concept in late eighteenth-century France
This article explores the concept of ‘normal’ in the late-eighteenth century. It focuses on how these pre-normal meanings illuminate contemporaneous depictions of the role and importance of sexuality. The current sense of the term ‘normal’ enters the dictionaries relatively late in the period, having been a synonymous but less common alternative for ‘perpendicular’ in geometry. Indeed, ‘normal’ is so unfamiliar a word that the important late-nine…
Emilie du Chatelet: Rewriting Enlightenment Philosophy and Science
This collection does not so much rewrite Enlightenment philosophy and science as re-assess Châtelet's 'cultural capital' (the phrase is Adrienne Mason's, in her excellent essay on translation) and enable us to understand better than we have before how she was perceived by her contemporaries, and how and why she was able to associate herself with 'les gens de lettres'. John Iverson shows us how strong this association was in his analysis of her in…
Modèles violents et sensations fortes dans la genèse de l'œuvre de Sade
The Essai sur l'art oratoire (1799) is the only treatise on rhetoric published during the French Revolution ; in a period of powerful public speech, its actors were suspicious of eloquence and eliminated rhetoric from school curricula. Droz's reflection takes into account political upheaval and tries to establish the conditions, forms and importance of a new democratic speech. This article studies the immediate reaction to the Essai and its pract…
Writing as Pathology, Poison, or Cure Henri-Frédéric Amiel's Journal intime
This article examines the life and work of Henri-Frédéric Amiel, 19th-century Swiss diarist. It argues that his journal provides an exemplary text through which to examine the issues of pathographesis, or the writing out of illness. Situating the diary within the Romantic contexts of melancholy and self-exploration, it shows that Amiel took themes and genre further than ever before, producing a piece of writing that both defines and creates his i…
Cultures of Melancholia in Late Capitalism—A Reflection Response to Discussion by Jeanne Wolff Bernstein
Our reply to Jeanne Wolff Bernstein claims that she is an ideal reader for the type of analysis we offered: because she is familiar with the European literary tradition, because she so obviously harbors a sense of the interface of literature and psychoanalysis, and—not least—because she herself has so meticulously studied the nuanced details of our diagnosis. We concur, furthermore, with the melancholia diagnosis she attributes to us and understa…
