  • Baudelairean Empathy and the Limits of Transcendence

Maria C Scott, Maria Scott•ARTICLE•Irish Journal of French Studies•2021

Inscriptions of empathy for other human beings, in Baudelaire's poetry, communicate an affective experience that has long outlived both the poet and its originator. His poems, which often give thematic prominence to the idea of an afterlife, tend therefore to have their own afterlife, even as they gesture towards both the possibility and the impossibility of the transcendence of physical limitations. The article, which begins with a brief discuss…

  • Petit catéchisme stendhalien Petit catéchisme stendhalien. Par P hilippe B erthier . Paris: Éditions de Fallois, 2012. 188 pp

    Maria C Scott, Maria Scott•ARTICLE•French Studies•2013

This work is the offshoot of a long and distinguished engagement with Stendhal's writings, of an extensive cultural knowledge, and a relentless sense of fun. As the title economically suggests, it offers lessons in the tenets of beylisme while also articulating Stendhal's attitude towards God and religion. The book begins by proposing that the author's apparent atheism was not absolute, and concludes with the idea that Stendhal's patent anticleri…

  • Stendhal’s Muddy Realism

    Maria C Scott, Maria Scott•ARTICLE•Dix-Neuf•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This essay examines the role of mud in the work of Stendhal. It argues that what is often a stable marker of reality in his writing, as in Realist writing more generally, can also operate as a destabilizing element by pointing to the limits of metaphor and understanding. The essay begins by examining two famous passages from Stendhal’s major fictions. It argues that in the first, from Le Rouge et le Noir, the meaning of the mud metaphor is both p…

  • Performing Desire: Stendhal's Theatrical Heroines

    Maria C Scott, Maria Scott•ARTICLE•French Studies•2008•References: 1

Stendhal's independent heroines, often associated with a taste for the theatrical, do not tend to win the preference of his male heroes. As a result, they are often considered by critics to be less successful than their more traditionally ‘feminine’ counterparts in achieving their goals. However, this paper argues that characters such as Mathilde de La Mole, la Sanseverina, Lamiel, Mina Wanghen and Mina de Vanghel achieve a level of control over …

  • Lacan's 'Of the Gaze as Objet Petit a' as Anamorphic Discourse

    Open Access•Maria C Scott, Maria Scott•ARTICLE•Paragraph•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 1

This article makes the case for a symmetry between the form and content of Lacan's 1964 seminars on vision in The Four Fundamental Concepts of Psychoanalysis. As well as theorizing anamorphosis, or visual resistance, as a model of the dialectic between the eye and the gaze, the seminars function to lure and frustrate their auditor-readers. This reading, supported by Lacan's references to his own discourse as a labyrinth and network of threads, sh…

  • Superfluous Intrigues in Baudelaire's Prose Poems

  • Equal Opportunities: Rhetoric or action

Sue Lees, Maria C Scott et al.•ARTICLE•Gender and Education•1990

During the last 10 years many higher educational institutions following the ILEA initiatives and equal opportunity (EO) legislation of the mid 1970's, announced they were equal opportunity institutions. This paper questions whether such pronouncements and declared policies have had any more than a marginal effect on the power structures and day to day running of institutions. It proposes that a positive action programme should be adopted to incre…
