Commerce and Peace in the French Revolution: Rougier-Labergerie’s International Political Economy
This study examines the political economy of international trade and perpetual peace proposed by the agronomist Jean-Baptiste Rougier-Labergerie under the French Directory. Drawing on Rougier-Labergerie’s treatise on commerce and peace, this article shows how a political economy that was rooted in natural jurisprudence navigated the challenges of subsistence and war through turbulent times that extended beyond the Thermidor. Similar to eighteenth…
La Révolution française jugée par un philosophe des lumières: Une étude sur Jacques-Henri Meister
This article examines the relationship between the Enlightenment and the French Revolution by analysing the views of the philosophe Jacques-Henri Meister in a historical context. Unlike other surviving philosophes in Paris such as Forbonnais or Saint-Lambert, Meister had greater freedom to express his critical perspectives on the Revolution's process and outcomes. He strongly opposed what he saw as democratic or republican elements but was not a …
Jean‐Baptiste Say and the Political Economy of Republican Utopia in Revolutionary France
This article offers a fresh analysis of Olbie (1798), a frequently overlooked essay by the French author and economist Jean‐Baptiste Say (1767–1832). It positions Olbie as a central text for comprehending Say's political thought and situates it within the wider historical context, in particular French republicanism during the 1790s. In doing so, the article argues against interpretations that read Olbie as a pioneer in placing economics before mo…
Testing the Effects of Relative Newsworthiness on News Selection
This study conducts an experiment to explore news selection on digital news platforms (e.g., Apple News). We found that the likelihood of selecting a certain news headline varied in terms of how newsworthy the headline is relative to other headlines available at the time of selection. This tendency to select news with relatively higher newsworthiness makes partisans more likely to engage in cross-cutting exposure, although the effects of relative…

William Godwin on Democracy: The Time-Regime of Political Thought in the Age of Revolutions
William Godwin is predominantly recognized as a theoretical anarchist who envisioned a tranquil anarchy wherein no government was deemed necessary. Equally emphasized in academic literature is Godwin’s unwavering advocacy for gradualism and pacifism as a transition mechanism toward the ideal society—a strategy criticized by some as inadequate or naive in realizing this ideal. Scholars of Godwin have identified a contradiction within his thought o…
Political Equality and Economic Inequality in Étienne-Géry Lenglet’s Recipe for the Modern Republic
Reflections on the legacy of ‘Jacobin egalitarianism’ in post-Thermidorian France can be seen as following one of three strands: conservative, communist, or democratic. By shedding light on the democratic trajectory, this article addresses the historiographical imbalance that has disproportionately focused on conservative and communist perspectives. This study thereby pursues a renewed understanding of the relationship between the Enlightenment, …

Empathy With Muslim Victims of Discrimination: Can Personalization and Emotionalization in News Reporting Pave the Way
Hate crimes against Muslims in the United States have been on the rise since 2016 (FBI, 2022), discouraging this group’s participation in public life. Most Americans, therefore, encounter Muslims only via media representations. We investigated if two journalistic storytelling devices can kindle in white non-Muslim Americans empathy and supportive attitudes toward Muslim women who are victims of discrimination. Indeed, personalization and emotiona…

Sophie de Grouchy's Political Thought in the Letters on Sympathy (1798)
This article proposes a reading of Sophie de Grouchy's moral, political, and economic thought as embedded in the tradition of natural jurisprudence, adapted to the context of the French First Republic. A close reading of her French translation of Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiment and her eight Letters on Sympathy confirms that there are points to be made by reading her works in the context of the language of early modern natural law. This sh…
“It’s a lesson with no correct answer”: Design issues in preservice teachers’ use of history of science for lesson planning
While many recent curriculum reforms recognise the value of history of science (HOS) in science teaching, in-depth investigations into teachers' experiences of planning HOS-based science lessons have been rare. We present a case study of two groups of preservice science teachers (PSTs) who collaboratively planned high school science lessons using HOS. The research aims were to understand what design issues arose and how they unfolded as each grou…

We analyzed more than 9,000 images posted on Facebook pages run by U.S. news media between August 2014 and October 2020 using commercially developed computer vision tools and a topic modeling algorithm. The results show that images used in BLM-related news c…
Theories of representative government against democracy during the French Revolution
During the French Revolution, both advocates of a constitutional monarchy and proponents of a representative republic firmly rejected “democracy,” considering it not merely as an impractical but also as an undesirable form of governance for modern France. However, the rationale and methods employed in opposing and evading “democracy” remain insufficiently elucidated. Historical understanding of this rejection of democracy can be refined significa…

The Influence of News Brand Cues and Story Content on Citizen Perceptions of News Bias
Mainstream U.S. news media stand accused of bias against the forty-fifth president, Donald Trump. The relentlessness and intensity of these accusations over the course of Trump’s presidency are unusual and make for an opportunity to study perceptions of news bias. During the experiment reported here, participants ( N = 315) were exposed to biased (pro- and anti-Trump) news stories that were attributed to either CNN, Breitbart , or remained unattr…
Testing Partisan Selective Exposure in a Multidimensional Choice Context: Evidence from a Conjoint Experiment
The methodological shortcomings characterizing previous experimental research on selective and cross-cutting exposure (e.g. focusing on the impact of a few experimental factors and providing a limited range of choice alternatives) amount to an incomplete description of news choice behavior. This study proposes an alternative method that addresses these shortcomings in testing partisan news selection in the current media environment. A conjoint ex…
Condorcet and the Viability of Democracy in Modern Republics, 1789–1794
Democracy was in the margins both as an idea and as a political force in the eighteenth century. Even in the 1790s, ‘democracy’ was hardly the defining notion of the revolutionaries’ political visions. The small states as much as the large states perceived democracy as an outmoded legacy of antiquity leading to anarchy and despotism, inapplicable not least because it was undesirable in the modern world in which commerce was a rising force. This a…
Personality Basis for Partisan News Media Use: Openness to Experience and Consumption of Liberal News Media
This study explores the link between Openness to Experience (one dimension of the Big Five personality traits) and attitude-challenging news media use (crosscutting exposure). Two distinctive behavioral tendencies of Openness (political affinity toward liberal ideals vs. tolerance to political differences) allow us to propose two equally possible, but mutually exclusive, hypotheses regarding the association between Openness and crosscutting expos…

In pamphlets and newspaper articles between 1795 and 1799 he put forth an elaborate theory of ‘representative democracy’ which was a novel and radical vision of political reform and republican international order. His political and economic plan for a democratic future was focused on conceptualizing a realistic transition pa…

Volney and the French Revolution
This article examines Volney right before and after 1789. Placed together in their intellectual historical context, his works in this period - Travels in Syria and Egypt (1787), Considerations (1788), and The Ruins (1791) - offer a valuable guide into the workings of the "Enlightenment narrative" of "European" and "Oriental" history at the critical juncture of the age of revolutions. The image of Volney as a progressive stadial historian and opti…

Sociability, Natural Jurisprudence, and Republicanism in the French Revolution: Jean-Baptiste Salaville's Empiricist Science of the Legislator
The radical ideas of the French Revolution are generally regarded as the offspring of the theory of social contract. However, even though the Revolutionaries cherished Rousseau's legacy, the period was not without instances in which this legacy could be subject to variation and the notion of social contract could be attributed, in a decidedly negative tone, less to Rousseau than to Hobbes. In this context, the present study of Jean-Baptiste Salav…

This article examines Bertrand Bar e ` re’s Montesquieu peint d’apr e ` s ses ouvrages (1797) within the context of the speculations on the future of modernity in the political thought of the eighteenth century and the French Revolution. Broadly, Bar e ` re’s work contained three arguments: Montesquieu had been a covert republican forced to conceal his candid thoughts; Montesquieu had been wrong to despair about the future of large republics; The…
