Analysis of Major Depression Risk Genes Reveals Evolutionary Conservation, Shared Phenotypes, and Extensive Genetic Interactions
Major depressive disorder (MDD) affects around 15% of the population at some stage in their lifetime. It can be gravely disabling and it is associated with increased risk of suicide. Genetics play an important role; however, there are additional environmental contributions to the pathogenesis. THE TURBULENT DECADE OF THE 1970s witnessed extraordinary and hotly-contested transformations in American attitudes toward and sexuality. British Communists in the Cold War, 1947-52
As a result of the onset of the Cold War the British Communist Party lost the degree of relative acceptance and tolerance which it had enjoyed since the Second World War; was forced into political isolation and regarded with grave suspicion among the general public. This article examines the nature of perceptions and thinking within the party leadership as they struggled to cope with developments (which they badly misjudged), the constantly deter…

The Good Old Cause: British Communism 1920-1991
Scottish Communists, 1956—57
The Khrushchev secret speech of February 1956 and the Soviet invasion of Hungary in November constituted a traumatic shock to British Communists, resulting in deep public discredit, unprecedented rank-and-file dissent and the loss of one member in four. The Scottish section of the Party, which had enjoyed a stronger trade union and local government influence than its English counterpart, showed, with variations, the same general pattern of develo…
Peers as primary attachment sources in yearling rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta)
Peer bonds were examined in 2 experiments using juvenile rhesus monkeys to determine (a) whether specific attachment bonds are formed between age-mates, (b) whether preferred age-mates can provide a secure base, and (c) whether a previous attachment bond affects the quality of subsequent attachment bonds
On Andre Gorz’s 'Sartre and Marx
The article by André Gorz on Sartre’s contribution to Marxism elucidates one of the most fundamental problems of socialist theory in the 20th century, a problem summed up in a phrase of the final paragraph, ‘the question of the possibility of suppressing the inhuman in human history’. That
