Relative age effects in ice hockey extends to coaching
Date of birth influences the chances of success in sports. Compared to players born just before a cutoff date for marking the admissibility in a category (age groups), players born soon after are overrepresented. However, it is not yet known whether the effect of date of birth in sports applies beyond the players' active participation in the game. The aim of the study was to determine whether there is a date of birth effect among ice hockey's coa…
A non-competitive sporting challenge
Given that scientific evidence shows that regular physical activity (PA) has physical, psychological, and social benefits, multiple initiatives have been implemented to promote its practice among women. One such initiative is Le Défi des Roses, a non-competitive sporting challenge in Quebec, Canada. A mixed method study consisting of a questionnaire (n = 141) and individual interviews (n = 38) was used among women enrolled in the challenge to: 1)…
Investigation of Underlying Association between Anthropometric and Cardiorespiratory Fitness Markers among Overweight and Obese Adolescents in Canada
Individually, WC or WHtR seem to be better markers for evaluating cardiometabolic risk than BMI during adolescence. However, CRF showed comparable importance to anthropometric markers in determining cardiometabolic risk. The simultaneous inclusion of anthropometric and CRF markers provides a better picture of the global cardiometabolic risk in adolescents
Secular trends of cardiorespiratory fitness in children and adolescents over a 35-year period
Background In the context of concerns regarding the cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) of youth populations, the aims of this study were: (1) to update reference values for the VO 2 max for school-aged Canadians and (2) to document secular trends in CRF after a 35-year interval. Methods Between September 2014 and April 2017, the CRF of 3725 students (53.2% boys; 6.0 to 17.9 yrs) was determined using the 20-m shuttle run test. The sample was collecte…
The science and art of testing in ice hockey
Updating normative cross-sectional values and secular trends in body mass, body height and body mass index among Québec children and adolescents
This study provides up-to-date data on factors that contribute to the prevalence of overweight and obesity in youth in urban settings of Québec, and will be instrumental in guiding public health strategies designed to optimize growth outcomes
Exploring associations between sprinting mechanical capabilities, anaerobic capacity, and repeated-sprint ability of adolescent ice hockey players
IntroductionSprinting ability and anaerobic capacities are the determinant variables of the performance of ice hockey players. Recent research in sprinting showed the existence of distinct force-velocity (F-V) profiles, but the link between these profiles and anaerobic capacities remains unclear. This study explores the associations between F-V variables and anaerobic capacities among cohorts of highly trained adolescent ice hockey players.Method…
An analysis of mechanisms underlying social goals in physical education
Background The effect of basic needs and motivational climate has been widely examined in recent years in the field of achievement motivation. Nevertheless, recent studies indicate the need to consider students’ (with or without special needs) social goals (e.g. affiliation, recognition, status and responsibility goals) in order to achieve a better understanding of teenagers’ motivation to engage in physical activities such as physical education …
Elite Adolescent Ice Hockey Players
Despite off-ice advantages, the taller-heavier prototype does not translate directly to better performance on the ice among elite adolescent players. Coaches should analyze anthropometric characteristics with caution, and place more focus on match-specific abilities to identify talent
The FitSpirit approach for increasing physical activity in canadian teenage girls
NCT, NCT03804151 , Registered on January 22, 2019; retrospectively registered
Relative Age Effect in Canadian Hockey
The term "relative age effect" (RAE) is used to describe a bias in which participation in sports (and other fields) is higher among people who were born at the beginning of the relevant selection period than would be expected from the distribution of births. In sports, RAEs may affect the psychological experience of players as well as their performance. This article presents 2 studies. Study 1 aims to verify the prevalence of RAEs in minor hockey…
Changes in Lifestyle Habits among Adolescent Girls after FitSpirit Participation
Adolescence is a crucial time in the development and maintenance of lifestyle habits. Interventions to improve health-related behaviors are important, including those that can contribute to an increase in physical activity (PA). During adolescence, PA typically decreases with age, particularly in girls. The FitSpirit program offers services that help Canadian schools from Quebec and Ontario implement PA interventions for adolescent girls. This st…
