Inside the Chinese heterosexual matrix: Lesbian and gay middle leaders’ experiences in Chinese schools
This paper employs feminist poststructuralist and queer theory to analyze the experiences of three gay and lesbian middle leaders in Chinese schools. Drawing on Butler’s heterosexual matrix, and Foucault’s concepts of governmentality and disciplinary power, we propose the concept of a distinctly Chinese heterosexual matrix to theorize the particular ways in which the gender-sexuality order is policed in Chinese schools, wherein Confucianist and P…
Growing sideways: Re‐articulating ontologies of childhood within/through relationships and sexuality education (RSE)
This article presents a collaborative reflective‐thinking‐writing project that draws from the authors’ experiences of co‐productive and critical inquiry with children in the field of gender, sexualities and education. Integrating our collective concerns regarding how childhood can be negatively framed and policed within/through RSE, we explore how these ontological boundaries might be queered through a collective engagement with the possibilities…
Understanding and assessing uncertainty of observational climate datasets for model evaluation using ensembles
In climate science, observational gridded climate datasets that are based on in situ measurements serve as evidence for scientific claims and they are used to both calibrate and evaluate models. However, datasets only represent selected aspects of the real world, so when they are used for a specific purpose they can be a source of uncertainty. Here, we present a framework for understanding this uncertainty of observational datasets which distingu…
They don’t really talk about it ‘cos they don’t think it’s right’: Heteronormativity and institutional silence in UK primary education
Of the increasing number of initiatives setting out to challenge heteronormativity in education, the No Outsiders project has arguably been one of the most influential. Conducted across 15 primary schools in England, No Outsiders sought to disrupt heteronormativity through critical pedagogy, gaining widespread academic and media attention in the process. In spite of its prominence, though, there has been a lack of research exploring the effects o…
Ethical complexities in participatory childhood research: Rethinking the 'least adult role
This article draws on data from a comparative ethnography of two UK primary schools to explore the complexities inherent in Mandell's 'least adult role'. In the interest of gaining insight into children's informal productions of sexuality and gender, this role was used to gain access to peer group cultures and diffuse the imbalance of power between researcher and researched. However, while found to be productive in a number of ways, 'least adulth…
