Does Medicaid Cover the Cost of Nursing Home Care? Variation By Ownership Status, Payer-Mix, and Staffing Level
OBJECTIVES: This paper examines whether Medicaid payment rates are aligned with the cost of caring for Medicaid residents and how this relationship varies by facility characteristics. BACKGROUND: Medicaid is the primary payer for most nursing home residents, but limited information exists on the relationship between payment rates and costs of caring for Medicaid beneficiaries. METHODS: Per diem Medicaid payment rates were obtained directly from s…
Cold water ingestion ameliorates increase in core temperature and discomfort during simulated motor racing in a hot environment
Introduction Formula One and other motor car racing drivers race for prolonged periods in hot conditions wearing protective apparel that impairs heat loss. They are thus at risk of a significantly elevated core temperature. The aims of this study were to determine whether the voluntary ingestion of cold fluid aided thermoregulation more effectively than the voluntary ingestion of ambient temperature fluid in a simulated motor racing environment. …
Does radiofrequency radiation impact sleep? A double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, crossover pilot study
The most common source of Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Field (RF-EMF) exposures during sleep includes digital devices, yet there are no studies investigating the impact of multi-night exposure to electromagnetic fields emitted from a baby monitor on sleep under real-world conditions in healthy adults. Given the rise in the number of people reporting to be sensitive to manmade electromagnetic fields, the ubiquitous use of Wi-Fi enabled digital d…
Promoting Sustainability in Housing with Services
Despite the widely-acknowledged potential of housing with services for improving the lives of low-income older adults, ensuring their financial sustainability has been challenging. This study aimed to address this issue, drawing on 31 key informant interviews and three focus groups with payers, housing providers, and community partners involved in the Boston-area Right Care, Right Place, Right Time Program, which enrolled about 400 older adults. …
Society for the Protection of the Health of the Jewish Population (OSE)
The essay's primary purpose is to bring to the attention of readers interested in the history of the Jewish people that the dramatic 20th century is not only the victims of the Holocaust–and not only the heroism of the military on the battlefields. It is active resistance to barbarism–the rescue of defenseless people through daily civilian activities, nevertheless associated with a constant risk to life. This paper examines non-political and non-…
Improving Care for Older Adults in China
This special issue covers several important topics related to long-term care (LTC) systems and policy development in China. It provides a good contextual background on the development of the LTC system in China as well as the needs and preferences of LTC from family and older adults’ perspectives. In addition, this issue covers the topic of evaluation of a recently developed long-term care nursing insurance and provides an example of family careg…
Trust Does Beget Trustworthiness and Also Begets Trust in Others
Social scientists widely believe that trust begets trustworthiness, meaning that persons reward actions that they view as expressing trust. But evidence from the trust game (also known as the investment game)—introduced by Berg, Dickhaut, and McCabe and frequently used to test this relationship—is surprisingly inconclusive. The present article therefore reexamines this hypothesis (Experiment 1), using the trust game but incorporating mediation an…
Coronavirus disease 19 in minority populations of Newark, New Jersey
Findings from an inter-city hospital's experience with COVID-19 among underserved minority populations showed that, more than one of every three patients were at risk for in-hospital death or morbidity. Older age and elevated inflammatory markers at presentation were associated with in-hospital death
Generalized Trust in Taiwan and (as Evidence for) Hirschman's doux commerce Thesis
Data from the World Values Survey shows that generalized trust in Mainland China-trust in out-group members-is very low, but generalized trust in Taiwan is much higher. The present paper argues that positive interactions with out-group members in the context of Taiwan's export-oriented economy fostered generalized trust-and so explains this difference. This line of argument provides evidence for Albert O. Hirschman's doux commerce thesis, that ma…

Indulgence or therapy? Exploring the characteristics, motivations and experiences of hot springs bathers in Victoria, Australia
Hot springs are a $50 billion global industry and a growing segment of the wellness tourism sector, yet no previous research has focused on the views of hot spring users and the drivers for hot spring visitation in Australia are unclear. We performed a cross-sectional observational study through an online Qualtrics survey to assess the characteristics, motivations and experiences of visitors to Australia’s largest commercial hot spring. Primary a…
Alternative Conceptions of Generalized Trust (and the Foundations of the Social Order)
Genuine, non-calculative trust with calculative antecedents
This short paper defends Oliver Williamson's claim that talk of trust is ‘redundant at best and can be misleading’ when trust is defined as a form of calculated risk (Williamson, O. E. [1993]. Calculativeness, trust, and economic organization. The Journal of Law and Economics, 36, 453–486). And this paper accepts Williamson's claim that ‘Calculative trust is a contradiction in terms’. But the present paper defends a conception of genuine, non-cal…
As…
Wellness and the Thermodynamics of a Healthy Lifestyle
Wellness has recently emerged as an industry sector and a multidimensional academic discipline that includes psychological, physiological, social, demographic and ecological dimensions. Wellness enhances resilience and is therefore a survival imperative that is fundamental to life, yet current Western definitions of wellness do not refer to fundamental a priori principles. Eastern medicine on the other hand does refer to universal principles and …

Understanding the State Variation in Medicare Home Health Care
OBJECTIVES: During the past 7 years there has been a significant increase in the use of the Medicare home health benefit. In this article, the authors document trends in the use of the benefit and develop multivariate models to identify the factors that explain state variation in its use. METHODS: To develop quantitative models, the authors collected state information on all variables for each of 3 years: 1991, 1992, and 1993. The authors chose t…

The Lifetime Risks and Costs of Nursing Home Use Among the Elderly
In this paper, we estimate the risk of an individual of entering a nursing home throughout the aging process. We then estimate the expected lifetime costs of nursing home use both for an individual and for society as a whole. The model is based on double-decrement life-table analysis. Data are taken from a 1977 survey of 4,400 Medicare beneficiaries. At age 65, the upper bound for the lifetime risk of entering a nursing home is 43.1%. The risk of…
