The theoretical framework is inspired by Yvonne Hirdman’s understanding of gender in a binary system and R. W. Connell’s definition of hegemonic masculinity. Data consist of 10 semi-structured interviews with the most prominent female sports journalists in Sweden. The sports journalists in this study express that there has been a change …
Swedish supporter culture – restrictions, conflicts, resistance
This study investigates the conflict between, on the one hand, the Swedish police and law enforcement and, on the other, supporters, football clubs, and the organization of Swedish Elite Football. The core of this conflict is the introduction of a new structure for maintaining order, referred to as the Condition Ladder (Villkorstrappan), aimed at addressing disturbances and pyrotechnics in the stands. The aim of this article is to chart and analy…

Hence, sports and educational institutions need to recognize the increased role of the individual as “a facilitator of knowledge” through information and communications technology (ICT). For sport organizations and educational institutions to effectively reach out with knowledge and research, they need to know how individuals assess, v…

In our analysis, we focus on how the different actors understood, operationalized and practiced elements of sustainability in their everyday lives wh…

Hooligans
There are several problems with using the terms hooligan and hooliganism, as these are not emotionally neutral. The media as well as other parties use these terms uncritically to indicate a number of different phenomena. I will argue about the importance of understanding the complexity of the various aspects of supportership. This includes an understanding of the many facets of supportership as well as the numerous different contexts in which the…
‘Football’s Coming Home’ but Whose Home? And Do We Want It
This chapter argues that the dominant discourse that surrounded Euro 96 (the 1996 European Football Championships) drew on, and reinforced, a form of cultural racism that currently appears to be pervasive. It is argued that the national ‘imagined community’ (Anderson 1991) that was reconstructed was one that actively worked to exclude certain categories of people-being both gendered and racially exclusive. Seeking to understand the underlying cul…
