Physical demands and movement characteristics of veterans football players
Background This study aimed to investigate physical demands and movement characteristics of veterans football (VF) players. VF players were recruited from the West and South London Leagues. Methods A 15 m shuttle run test was used to assess maximum heart rate (HR max ), and continuous heart rate was monitored to evaluate the cardiocirculatory strain during matches. Video analysis was performed to analyze movement characteristics, such as step cou…
Effects on cardiorespiratory fitness of moderate-intensity training vs. energy-matched training with increasing intensity
Introduction The present study investigated the role of training intensity in the dose–response relationship between endurance training and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). The hypothesis was that beginners would benefit from an increase in training intensity after an initial training phase, even if the energy expenditure was not altered. For this purpose, 26 weeks of continuous moderate training (control group, CON) was compared to training with…
Acute effects of mental recovery strategies in simulated air rifle competitions
Objectives The present study aimed to assess the perception and change of mental and physical fatigue and to examine acute effects of mental recovery strategies in air rifle athletes across simulated competition days with two consecutive competition bouts. Design We conducted a randomized counterbalanced crossover study. Method 22 development air rifle athletes (M age = 17.77 ± 4.0) of a regional squad participate in the study. The Short Recovery…
Shortcomings of applying data science to improve professional football performance
Positional tracking data allows football practitioners to derive features that describe patterns of player behavior and quantify performance. Existing research using tracking data has mostly focused on what occurred on the pitch, such as the determinants of effective passing. There have yet to be studies attempting to use findings from data science to improve performance. Therefore, 24 professional players (mean age = 21.6 years, SD = 5.7) were d…
Dwarfs on the Shoulders of Giants
While sample sizes in elite sports are necessarily small, so are the effects that may be relevant. This conundrum is complicated by an understandable reluctance of athletes to comply with extensive study requirements. In Bayesian analyses, pre-existing knowledge (e.g., from sub-elite trials) can be formally included to supplement scarce data. Moreover, some design specifics for small sample research extend to the extreme case of a single subject.…
Are Measurement Instruments Responsive to Assess Acute Responses to Load in High-Level Youth Soccer Players
Purpose The aim of this study was to assess the short-term responsiveness of measurement instruments aiming at quantifying the acute psycho-physiological response to load in high-level adolescent soccer players. Methods Data were collected from 16 high-level male youth soccer players from the Under 15 age group. Players were assessed on two occasions during the week: after 2 days of load accumulation (“high load”) and after at least 48 h of rest.…
Recovery-Stress Response of Blood-Based Biomarkers
The purpose of this study was to investigate blood-based biomarkers and their regulation with regard to different recovery-stress states. A total of 35 male elite athletes (13 badminton, 22 soccer players) were recruited, and two venous blood samples were taken: one in a 'recovered' state (REC) after a minimum of one-day rest from exercise and another one in a 'non-recovered' state (NOR) after a habitual loading microcycle. Overall, 23 blood-base…
Construct validity of percentage of predicted adult height and Baus skeletal age to assess biological maturity in academy soccer
Results confirm the construct-validity of both methods to assess biological maturity status although further validation relative to established indicators of biological maturity is needed. Furthermore, caution is also warranted when interpreting maturity status classification methods interchangeably given the poor concordance between classification methods
Heroes at Home, Suspects Abroad? National and International Perceptions of Elite-Sports Success
It is often claimed that elite sport success increases national pride as well as the international prestige of a country. To scrutinize this broad-shed assumption, we draw on data from an online survey carried out around the Rio 2016 Olympics, including questions on success, national identity and attitudes towards other countries and athletes. Exploratory analyses of open questions reveal that successful athletes celebrated at home are often igno…
Football clubs and philanthropy
Using data collected by means of an online questionnaire of German football-club volunteers, we studied whether match quality helps to predict philanthropy as measured in terms of donations. Match quality is defined as the congruence of a volunteer's motives for volunteering with his or her utility experiences and can thus be expected to foster the production of volunteer satisfaction and eventually social capital. Social capital has a bonding an…
