Hata-Yanagiya physical activity calculation system: A novel global positioning system-based method for accurate estimation of oxygen consumption during walking and running
The HYPAC system provides a transparent and accurate method for estimating VO 2 during walking and running, outperforming existing methods under varied conditions. Its open-source framework encourages further validation and improvement by researchers and practitioners. Future studies should address limitations such as sample size and population diversity to enhance the system's applicability
UMP inhibited muscle atrophy due to detraining: A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel-group comparative study
Purpose A short period of disuse of 1–2 weeks due to factors such as illness or injury can lead to muscle atrophy, affecting both athletic performance and health. Recent research has shown that uridine 5′-monophosphate (5′-UMP) can counteract disuse-induced muscle atrophy by increasing PGC-1α expression and inhibiting atrogin-1 expression. However, the effect of 5′-UMP on disuse muscle atrophy in humans remains unknown. Therefore, the aimed of th…
A 100-m Sprint Time Is Associated With Deep Trunk Muscle Thickness in Collegiate Male Sprinters
Introduction: One reason athletes train their trunk muscles is that the body's trunk stability has been shown to prevent injury. However, the relationship between body trunk muscle thickness, particularly that of deep muscles, and athletic performance remains to be clarified. Purpose: We aimed to explore the relationship between 100-m sprint performance and the sizes of the trunk stabilizing muscles, the psoas major muscle (PM), transversus abdom…
Strategies for Overcoming Japan’s Economic Crisis
It is my great pleasure to participate in this effort to honour my friend Hugh Patrick. Foreign scholars who understand Japan’s economic experience are a very scarce resource, and Hugh’s contributions are admired throughout the world. Indeed, Hugh was among the first to appreciate that the macroeconomic policies being pursued by the Hashimoto Government in 1996 and 1997 would very likely lead to an economic crisis. It is this crisis that I now wa…
