The State Connection in China's Rural-Urban Migration
This study explores the role of China's rural local state-owned and urban state-owned units in its rural-urban migration process. Most studies on Chinese migration have focused on migrants moving from rural to urban areas through informal mechanisms outside of the state's control. They therefore treat the Chinese state as an obstructionist force and dismiss its facilitative role in the migration process. By documenting rural local states' “labor …
Realpolitik Nationalism: International Sources of Chinese Nationalism
Conventional understandings of Chinese nationalism often portray it as anti-Western, focusing on Chinese nationalists' obsession with a powerful state and on their ambition to recover the glory of China's historical empire. Such understandings clearly underlie the fear and hostility toward rising Chinese nationalism today. But this view relies too heavily on China's conflictive relations with the West and overemphasizes the impact of China's uniq…
Guerrilla Workfare: Migrant Renovators, State Power, and Informal Work in Urban China
The article explores Chinese rural migrants' perspective on work and their relations with each other and with the Chinese state by drawing upon the ethnographical study of a group of rural home renovators in Beijing in the 1990s. The rural renovators were dubbed 'guerrilla' workers because of their physical mobility, irregular employment, and unregistered status. After considering the novelty of guerrilla workfare in China, the article demonstrat…
From national identity to national security: China's changing responses toward India in 1962 and 1998
This article contrasts and explains China's divergent reactions to India on two occasions in their long and complicated relationship. In 1962, a series of border clashes between China and India escalated into a full-fledged border war between the two countries. China reacted to India's territorial claims and its ambiguous stance on Tibet with a violent military attack. In 1998, five consecutive nuclear tests by India, mixed with Indian allegation…

Reconstituting the Rural‐Urban Divide: Peasant migration and the rise of 'orderly migration' in contemporary China
The dramatic rise in China's rural-to-urban migration in recent years represents a sharp contrast to earlier decades when population movement was limited due to strict government control. This paper first traces the historical institutional conditions that prevented large-scale rural-to-urban migration in the 1960s and 1970s. It focuses on three interlocking mechanisms of control: urban employment policy; food rationing; and household registratio…
Elusive Democracy: Conceptual Change and the Chinese Democracy Movement, 1978-79 to 1989
is a communicatively constituted activity. This claim has been taken to heart by many scholars who pay attention to linguistic actions in political practice (Habermas, 1984; Ball and Pocock, 1988: 1; Skinner, 1988). Politics may be about asserting one's rights against a dominant power or making allocative decisions or organizing and building coalitions for a common purpose. Undergirding all these activities are concepts, words, and speech that ma…
