  • Bringing it back to show and tell: Combining visual and textual data to explore a psychological construct

Open Access•Lisa R Trainor, Andrea Bundon•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2026

In this paper, we use two studies to reflect on how we explored the topic of athlete well-being and the challenges presented when attempting to identify the shared meanings and theoretical underpinnings of this context-specific psychological concept. We discuss how semi-structured interviews left us feeling stifled during data analysis. This spurred us to explore visual methods, specifically photo-elicitation, in our second study to help us addre…

Lisa R Trainor, Andrea Bundon et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2025

Although psychological well-being (PWB) in athletes is receiving increased scrutiny, there is some confusion about what constitutes PWB in elite sport. In March 2020, it was announced that the Tokyo Games would be postponed for one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While athletes commonly face challenges in sport such as injuries, the pandemic and rescheduling of the Games was an unexpected event that had serious potential to challenge the psychological wellbeing of athletes. Furthermore, it was an event that was simultaneously experienced by all athletes preparing for the Games. It provided a …

  • Developing the craft: Reflexive accounts of doing reflexive thematic analysis

Lisa R Trainor, Andrea Bundon•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2021

Thematic analysis (TA) is unique in that it does not come with a predetermined theoretical framework, leaving the researcher accountable to articulate methodological decisions made. As a community of qualitative scholars, we need to clearly articulate and define the theoretical foundations, assumptions, and parameters that guide our work and analysis. We also need to be transparent about our reflections during data analysis, sharing our tensions,…
