Challenges and considerations in determining the quality of electronic performance & tracking systems for team sports
Electronic performance & tracking systems (EPTS) are commonly used to track the location and velocity of athletes in many team sports. A range of associated applications using the derived data exist, such as assessment of athlete characteristics, informing training design, assisting match adjudication and providing fan insights for broadcast. Consequently the quality of such systems is of importance to a range of stakeholders. The influence of bo…
Kick proficiency and skill adaptability increase from an Australian football small-sided game intervention
This investigation is the first to explore the effect of a 4 week small-sided game (SSG) and traditional training intervention on player kick proficiency and player adaptability in Australian football. Twenty-two amateur Australian football players (mean ± SD; age 22.3 ± 2.46; height 182.4 ± 5.25; weight 82.1 ± 6.10; years playing senior amateur football 3.86 ± 3.09) were randomly selected into either a traditional training group ( n = 11) or a S…
Searching for ‘Deeper Magic’; A Comparative Exercise in Children’s Homes Using a System Analysis
Those responsible for placing highly vulnerable children in regulated Children’s Homes need to ensure the Home can meet the child’s needs. Assessing suitability to meet a child’s needs is often benchmarked against findings and judgements awarded by Ofsted and which are established on regulatory requirements and quality standards. For those Homes that may struggle to raise standards, this paper explores the use of an additional management instrume…
Future Directions and Considerations for Talent Identification in Australian Football
As the focus on the elite Australian Football League competition becomes greater so too does the demand for success. Clubs are heavily scrutinized for their draft selections and as such are taking more interest in the younger levels of competition in an attempt to identify and monitor talent. Based on contemporary talent identification knowledge, this review examines the current talent identification process in Australian football, with a focus o…
Technical Determinants of On-Water Rowing Performance
Purpose: Research establishing relationships between measures of rowing technique and velocity is limited. In this study, measures of technique and their effect on rowing velocity were investigated. Methods: Ten male singles, eight female singles, three male pairs, and six female pairs participated. Data from each stroke for forty-seven 2,000 m races were collected using Peach PowerLine and OptimEye S5 GPS units. General linear mixed modeling esta…

Bankruptcy law is a major part of the American legal landscape. More than a million individuals and thousands of businesses sought relief in the United States' 93 bankruptcy courts in 2014, more than 27,000 of them in the Eastern District of Michigan. Important business of great consequence takes place in the courts, yet they ordinarily draw little public attention. In Adversity and Justice, Kevin Ball takes a closer look at the history and evolu…
Kinematics of primate midfoot flexibility
This study describes a unique assessment of primate intrinsic foot joint kinematics based upon bone pin rigid cluster tracking. It challenges the assumption that human evolution resulted in a reduction of midfoot flexibility, which has been identified in other primates as the “midtarsal break.” Rigid cluster pins were inserted into the foot bones of human, chimpanzee, baboon, and macaque cadavers. The positions of these bone pins were monitored d…
Action Learning
This paper discusses applying an action learning methodology across the multi-agency network when working with child maltreatment as a way of enhancing case management. It offers a realistic application of the methodology, illustrated through recent practical experience and pilot, which aims to promote the opportunity for the multi-agency network to critically reflect on their interventions with children and families. By exploring the methodology…
