Cultural probes for planners
Planning practice often relies on expressed preferences, overlooking the lived and tacit dimensions of place. This paper positions cultural probes as an elicitation tool within a phenomenographic framework to access these dimensions. Drawing on a study of creative workers in Edmonton, multimodal artefacts, combined with semi-structured interviews, enabled the identification of qualitatively different ways of experiencing place. The paper demonstr…
Rights intrusion and land use planning inequalities in Alberta’s summer villages
This paper investigates challenges to property rights and equal treatment in Alberta’s summer villages post-1995, when regional planning commissions were disbanded. It focuses on how regulatory measures like minimum dwelling size requirements can restrict property owners’ ability to use and develop their land, disproportionately affecting those with fewer resources. A case study demonstrates these potential rights intrusions, worsened by the lack…
Producing Agreements and Innovations in Collaborative Governance
Collaborative governance initiatives often seek innovative solutions to longstanding policy dilemmas, as well as agreements on those solutions among longtime political adversaries. Producing both innovations and agreements in combination is difficult: the diversity among collaborators that enable innovations can complicate their attempts to reach agreements, while unifying factors that support agreements may diminish the prospects for innovation.…
Case Report
Purpose The aim of this case report was to describe the sleep responses in a male combat sport athlete, who was engaging in both chronic (CWL) and acute (AWL) weight loss practices in order to reduce body mass for a national competition. Methods During the first seven weeks of training (Phases 1 and 2), the athlete adhered to a daily energy intake (EI) equating to their resting metabolic rate (1700 kcal·day −1 ) followed by a reduction in EI (915…

Although reported prevalence estimates of certain mental disorders, substance use, or substance use disorders are not generally higher among racial and ethnic minority groups, persons in these groups are often less likely to receive treatment services (1). Persistent systemic social inequities and discrimination related to living conditions and work environments, which contribute to disparities in underlying medical conditions, can further c…

Defining and Assessing Quality Improvement Outcomes

Developed to address programmatic and research-identified needs for articulating the value of public health QI in aggregate, this framework proposes a standardized set of measures to monitor and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of public health programs and operations. We reviewed the scientific literature and analyzed QI …

Internal Validity
In the previous chapter, the problem of internal validity was discussed from an experimental perspective. That is, the case study method was understood as an attempt to satisfy the methodological criteria that define a well-designed experiment. To the extent that a single case, or a small number of cases, exemplify a quasi-experimental design, the case study method is vindicated. However, few case studies are truly experimental, in the sense of h…
Primary and Secondary Control Over Age‐Related Changes in Physical Appearance
Beliefs about appearance‐related changes due to aging were used to test the effects of perceived control and secondary control (acceptance) in a sample of 412 young, early‐middle‐age, and late‐middle‐age college‐educated adults. Mean difference in aging‐related appearance control and hypotheses regarding the adaptiveness of primary and secondary control were examined. Primary control over aging‐related appearance was lower in older adults and sec…
Illusions of control, underestimations, and accuracy
The illusions of control area is reviewed, and 5 conditions that influence control judgments are identified: skill-related factors, success or failure emphasis, need for the outcome, mood, and the intrusion of reality. It is proposed that individuals use a control heuristic that includes perceptions of intentionality and connection. Judgments of intentionality are based on foreseeability, ability to produce the effect, and valence of the outcome.…
