  • Virtual peers reduce gambling symptoms and related problems of moderate-risk gamblers

Open Access•Kenji Yokotani, Yosuke Seki et al.•ARTICLE•Computers in Human Behavior•2026

  • Effect of pachinko parlour openings and closings on neighbourhood income-generating crimes in Japan

Open Access•Kenji Yokotani, Nobuhito Abe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

The highest income-generating crime incidence rate was observed within a 0.5-1 km and 1-5 km radius of pachinko parlours. The opening of pachinko parlours also increased income-generating crime incidence rates, which increased after closing. Pachinko parlours are considered to be creating public harm because the corporate activities of these parlours make the youth in their neighbourhood perpetrators of fraud and older adults its victims. Future …

  • Case Report

Open Access•Mariko Nakamura, Takashi Naito et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2022

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympic Games were held in the hottest environment in the history of the games. Additionally, the worldwide coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic necessitated daily polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing during the games, wearing a mask became mandatory publicly, and it was an unheard and unique Olympic with no spectators. Heat acclimation, hydration, and body cooling are essential for safe and high-performa…

  • Third-party punishment by preverbal infants

    Open Access•Yasuhiro Kanakogi, Makoto Miyazaki et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 47

Third-party punishment of antisocial others is unique to humans and seems to be universal across cultures. However, its emergence in ontogeny remains unknown. We developed a participatory cognitive paradigm using gaze-contingency techniques, in which infants can use their gaze to affect agents displayed on a monitor. In this paradigm, fixation on an agent triggers the event of a stone crushing the agent. Throughout five experiments (total N = 120…

  • Validity of Bioimpedance Spectroscopy in the Assessment of Total Body Water and Body Composition in Wrestlers and Untrained Subjects

Open Access•Keisuke Shiose, Emi Kondo et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) is an easy tool to assess hydration status and body composition. However, its validity in athletes remains controversial. We investigated the validity of BIS on total body water (TBW) and body composition estimation in Japanese wrestlers and untrained subjects. TBW of 49 young Japanese male subjects (31 untrained, 18 wrestlers) were assessed using the deuterium dilution method (DDM) and BIS. De Lorenzo's and Moissl…

  • Japanese Young Women Did not Discriminate between Robots and Humans as Listeners for Their Self-Disclosure -Pilot Study

Open Access•Takahisa Uchida, Hideyuki Takahashi et al.•ARTICLE•Multimodal Technologies and…•2020•References: 12

Disclosing personal matters to other individuals often contributes to the maintenance of our mental health and social bonding. However, in face-to-face situations, it can be difficult to prompt others to self-disclose because people often feel embarrassed disclosing personal matters to others. Although artificial agents without strong social pressure for listeners to induce self-disclosure is a promising engineering method that can be applied in …

  • Can Robotic Systems Promote Self-Disclosure in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder? A Pilot Study

Open Access•Hirokazu Kumazaki, Zachary Warren et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2018

Research suggests that many individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often demonstrate challenges providing appropriate levels of information during conversational interchanges. Considering the preference of individuals with ASD, and recent rapid technological advances, robotic systems may yield promise in promoting certain aspects of conversation and interaction such as self-disclosure of appropriate personal information. In the current w…

  • An investigation of social factors related to online mentalizing in a human‐robot competitive game

Open Access•Hideyuki Takahashi, Chinatsu Saito et al.•ARTICLE•Japanese Psychological Research•2013

“Mentalizing” is the ability to attribute mental states to other agents. The lack of online mentalizing, which is required in actual social contexts, may cause serious social disorders such as autism. However, the mechanism of online mentalizing is still unclear. In this study, we found that behavioral entropy (which indicates the randomness of decision making) was an efficient behavioral index for online mentalizing in a human‐human competitive …

  • Maldivian National Security - And the Threats of Mercenaries

    Hideyuki Takahashi•ARTICLE•The Round Table•1999

The issue of protection and security of small states is quite significant in the current interpenetrative world. Most small states belong to the Third World and it is interesting to examine how small sovereign states in the Third World are maintaining their national security from different types of external threats. Some of these external threats involve the activities of transnational mercenaries and terrorists. After the attempted coup in 1988,…
