Hadiya, Hinduism and Heterosexuality
Depending on one’s point of view, the Hadiya case caught the national imagination for being a shocking example of “love jihad” or a horrifying instance of the growing criminalisation of desire. Since the latter view is informed by the former, this essay looks at the ways in which the nexus of patriarchy, nationalism, and sexual phobia has built up in India over the centuries, beginning with the laws promulgated under British rule. The emphasis on…

Do securely and insecurely attached children derive well‐being from different forms of gender identity
We examined whether attachment security moderates influences of two gender identity variables—felt gender typicality and felt pressure for gender differentiation—on preadolescents' well‐being. We tested two hypotheses. The first was that attachment security protects children from the distress that can stem from feeling gender atypical or from feeling pressure for gender conformity. The second was that secure children derive well‐being from believ…

Indifference to Difference
Universalism and Partition
This essay argues that the politics of partition encourages an ever specialized particularism that also undergirds identity politics. In such a world of particulars, we become what our identities proclaim us to be. While accepting that differences exist, universalism interrupts the ontological claim of particularity in order to posit a noncausal relation between what we do, think, eat, wear, profess, on the one hand, and what we are, on the other…
Mother-Child Attachment and Gender Identity in Preadolescence
Of Cause
This essay asks why the closing scene in Othello is so often viewed with horror: what differentiates this scene of murder from others in Shakespeare plays like Hamlet or Macbeth? What causes this “unutterable agony”? Thinking through the thread of desire in the play, this essay suggests one response to this question. The final scene in Othello is agonising because the play repeatedly refuses to give us a cause for it: the cause of the final scene…
The intrapsychics of gender
This article outlines a model of the structure and the dynamics of gender cognition in childhood. The model incorporates 3 hypotheses featured in different contemporary theories of childhood gender cognition and unites them under a single theoretical framework. Adapted from Greenwald et al. (2002), the model distinguishes three constructs: gender identity, gender stereotypes, and attribute self-perceptions. The model specifies 3 causal processes …

Wanton Words
In Wanton Words, Madhavi Menon intimately and expertly couples classical and Renaissance handbooks of rhetoric with canonical Renaissance plays and demonstrates their shared propensity to speak about sex often transgressive sex in the same instance that they speak about the workings of language. While other studies of rhetoric have confined their analyses to local questions of interpretive interest, Menon introduces rhetoric into the largely medi…
