Zulu Ethnic Identity, Social Connectedness (Ubuntu), and Resilience as Predictors of Subjective Well-Being Among “Born Free” Black South Africans
The complexity and fluidity of racial identities in contemporary South Africa are but one symptom of the historical trauma caused by decades of Apartheid. The racial hierarchies created by the white minority Afrikaners left an indelible mark on the psyches of all South Africans who experienced it firsthand. This study, however, seeks to examine the impact of Apartheid-related historical trauma on the so-called “Born Free” generation of South Afri…
Intermittent Interest and Low-Grade Archival Fevers
Streaming platforms powered by algorithms produce an exchange of analysis: users analyze media while the very platforms they use to do so also analyze them and augment their access to the archive accordingly. This essay suggests the term intermittent interest to name a relational engagement with an ever-changing television archive, one that is less intense, perhaps, than either full-blown archive desire or its complementary nemesis, archive fever…
Leveraging Dissent: A Policy Narrative's Power to Sow Distrust
The rise of political polarization and disagreement within the United States and other democracies indicates an erosion of the social contract, a deterioration exacerbated by the balkanization of social media, that can negatively impact our social relationships. Recent anti–Critical Race Theory (CRT) narratives in education provide insights into how policy narratives can be used to sow distrust in an educational context. In this paper Jane Lo and…
Multivariate Relations Between Lifetime Adversity and Substance Use Involvement: Comparisons Between Gay and Bisexual Emerging Adult Men
This study investigated multivariate relations between (a) lifetime experiences of adversity and (b) past year substance use involvement among cisgender sexual minority emerging adult men, ages 18–29 years. Ethnically and racially diverse samples of gay (N = 205, ageM = 24.33 years) and bisexual men (N = 201, ageM = 23.31 years) were recruited from the United States using the internet-based CloudResearch platform to complete 20-minute online surv…
Piqued: Compounded Interest and the Intersubjective Scene
In conversation with Silvan Tomkins, William James, Sianne Ngai, and others, "Piqued: Compounded Interest and the Intersubjective Scene" further theorizes one of the most taken-for-granted of the classic affects: interest. This essay argues that the piquing of interest is essential for projection, attachment, or resentment, even, to follow. Interest not only compounds, or accumulates with itself, sometimes sharpening or transforming into those mo…
Multivariate patterns of substance use, minority stress and environmental violence associated with sexual revictimization of lesbian and bisexual emerging adult women
This study documented between-group differences in factors associated with sexual revictimization histories in a sample of young sexual minority women. Diverse samples of lesbian ( N = 204, age M = 23.55 years) and bisexual ( N = 249, age M = 23.35 years) women from the United States were recruited using the CloudResearch platform to assess factors associated with recent experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV). Participants were categorize…
Culturally Conscious Assessment as Pedagogy in Study Abroad
The Higher Education in the Ghanaian Context (HEGC!) program was created to engage participants in critical examination of concepts related to power, privilege, and oppression within higher education settings in Ghana and the United States. The course has three components: pre-immersion, immersion, and emersion that are guided by a central “big” question: What can this experience teach me about contributing to a global society through the applica…
To Be Black Women and Contingent Faculty: Four Scholarly Personal Narratives
This study utilized scholarly personal narratives to explore the experiences and perceptions of four Black women who served as full-time contingent faculty members in higher education and student affairs graduate preparation programs. Authors drew upon Black feminist thought and intersectionality to frame this study. Specifically, authors extended Collin’s outsider-within status to outsider-outsider-within status to describe the unique experience…
Metaphysics of Queer TV
Proto-Queer Media Criticism
Lisa Ben's “Cinema Ramblings” in the 1940s underground publication Vice Versa mark some of the first media reviews to focus on homosexual themes, representations, and subtexts from a self-proclaimed lesbian perspective. While still largely unknown, the critical lenses and stylistic methods she employed set a precedent for the kind of radical queer media criticism that reviewers engage in today. Her writings deconstruct heteronormative frameworks …

Having it All Ways: The Tourist, the Traveler, and the Local in The L Word
One of the most effective strategies of the lesbian-themed serial drama The L Word has been a double one: to produce sex scenes that ensure appeal for a premium-paying straight audience, while offering specific pleasures for queer viewers "in the know." Analyzing scenes from the show's first and second seasons, I will demonstrate how the hit Showtime series makes us all tourists, through the enticement of lesbian sex (a spectacle of attraction fo…
