Sick leave in the United Kingdom Post Office, 1850–1908
This paper uses a large individual‐record‐level dataset on sick leave to examine adult morbidity in the United Kingdom between 1850 and 1908. From 1859 onwards postal workers were eligible to receive a pension or gratuity when they retired or were forced to stop working due to ill health. Their pension application forms contain information on up to 10 years of sick leave taken prior to retirement by each retiree. These data have several advantage…
Coziness in Games: Second Homes, Audiences, and Esthetics
The “Cozy” game has gained traction as a concept in contemporary game culture as a set of formal generic features. While we examine the way that Cozy Games are often now defined as a genre, we demonstrate that “coziness in games” has widespread formal and engagement functions and can be experienced in a whole range of games, not simply those defined by the Cozy genre. In focusing on the player–text relationship, and in using a literary model, we …
Managing the Police Workforce: Sickness and Pensions in the Metropolitan Police in Late Nineteenth-Century London
The provision of pensions for Civil Servants and other employees in public office, such as the police, as well as in large private businesses, became more widespread in the second half of the nineteenth century. Such pensions, and other non-pay benefits, including sick pay, not only helped with recruitment but also provided a means of managing the retirement of workers who were deemed to be incapable of performing their roles. The rules governing…

Climate‐Smart Landscapes: Opportunities and Challenges for Integrating Adaptation and Mitigation in Tropical Agriculture
Addressing the global challenges of climate change, food security, and poverty alleviation requires enhancing the adaptive capacity and mitigation potential of agricultural landscapes across the tropics. However, adaptation and mitigation activities tend to be approached separately due to a variety of technical, political, financial, and socioeconomic constraints. Here, we demonstrate that many tropical agricultural systems can provide both mitig…
Towards a Radical Democracy (Routledge Revivals): The Political Economy of the Budapest School
Originally published in 1988, this is the first systematic account of the writings of Hungarian dissidents and former students of George Lukacs, collectively known as the 'Budapest School'. Dr. Brown demonstrates the importance of their work in contributing to a logically consistent yet realistic theory of socialist mixed economies, and genuine radical democracies. The Budapest Schoool's model of radical democracy represents a critique of both in…

Talking with the Experts: A Social Justice Approach to Homelessness in Regina
Homelessness is a difficult phenomenon to measure. At risk populations can view intrusion from government officials with scepticism and resistance. Also the fluid nature of a homeless population (as individuals move in and out of ‘homelessness,’ and/or homeless situations) makes it difficult to generate accurate understandings of homelessness and the circumstances associate to becoming homeless. In this study researchers engage in a series of con…
Policy Coordination in Federal Systems: Comparing Intergovernmental Processes and Outcomes in Canada and the United States
Federations exist to divide power and to promote diversity. Nonetheless, in federations interdependence requires degrees of policy coordination across governments. We examine two means of coordinating policies in the U.S. and Canadian federations: administrative and jurisdictional federalism. The former, with its centralized coordinative mechanisms, is thought to produce more uniform national policy outcomes; the latter, operating in the context …
The Influence of Work Personality on Job Satisfaction: Incremental Validity and Mediation Effects
Drawing from recent developments regarding the contextual nature of personality (e.g., D. Wood & B. W. Roberts, 2006 ), we conducted 2 studies (1 cross‐sectional and 1 longitudinal over 1 year) to examine the validity of work personality in predicting job satisfaction and its mediation of the effect of global personality on job satisfaction. Study 1 showed that (a) individuals vary systematically in their personality between roles— they were sign…
A Toolkit for Practical Medical Ethics
“The aspect of the bull changes when you move into the arena.”—Old Spanish proverb Autumn Fiester has argued that the principlist paradigm typically taught to medical students and residents leaves them poorly equipped to navigate the ethical complexities associated with patient care [1]. Based on 2 decades of experience with medical students and residents in the hospital setting, I agree with her conclusion. Consider the following scenarios

Curriculum and the Classroom: Private and public spaces
Using critical discourse analysis, this paper draws on the narratives of a number of African Canadian high-school students who discuss the relevancy of the Social Studies curriculum as presented in the classroom. In particular, these students indicate that the curriculum distorts and excludes their histories, contributions, and lived experiences. For them, the meaning of being African Canadians extends beyond the geographical socio-political boun…

The Archaeology of the Scowlitz Site, SW British Columbia
This paper summarizes the results of six seasons of archaeological fieldwork conducted at the Scowlitz site located at the confluence of the Harrison and Fraser Rivers in SW British Columbia, Canada. Research beginning in 1992 has revealed a complex sequence of site use beginning with a residential occupation about 3000 years ago. After some 1500 years the site became a cemetery, featuring some of the best preserved examples of the burial mound a…

The Award of Compensation in Criminal Cases in East Africa
In East Africa the traditional division of “native justice” on the one side and “English law” on the other is gradually disappearing. Within the foreseeable future it is possible to visualize a single system of law administered by one judiciary. The fusion of customary law and modified English law has been, or is being, achieved with a remarkable lack of friction. Generally speaking, however, customary law has had to make greater sacrifices in ac…

The Rising Price of Physicians' Services: A Clarification
Several years ago, one of us presented a model of the market for physicians' services (Feldstein, 1970). In a subsequent comment, Brown and Lapan ( 1972) raised several questions about the model and the conclusions. Unfortunately, this comment and the reply by Feldstein ( 1972) left a number of issues unsettled. Some of the disagreement was based on misunderstanding and on drawing infer ences from different theoretical models. After the publicat…
