  • Opponents of immigration in Ireland

    Open Access•Tom Turner•ARTICLE•Irish Political Studies•2026

Opposition to immigration in Ireland has visibly increased in recent years. Considerable evidence indicates opponents of immigration are more likely to vote for populist parties and more likely to be disenchanted with the establishment of political parties and democratic institutions. In many Western European countries, opposition to immigration has been the driving force in the rise and electoral success of populist political parties. Using the …

  • Shaping political orientations

Open Access•Thomas Turner, Tom Turner et al.•ARTICLE•Irish Political Studies•2022•References: 27

Using data from the European Social Survey we test whether a period of unemployment in Ireland shapes individuals’ core political ideological beliefs towards the left of the political spectrum and whether the experience of unemployment prompts people to vote for left-leaning parties. Results indicate that unemployment is linked with more leftward core political ideological beliefs and is associated with a tendency to vote for left-leaning parties…

Through in‐depth interviews with 12 small retail leaders, thematic data analysis revealed an emergence of contingent leadership, including an internal focus o…

  • Gender differences in solo self‐employment

Open Access•Lauren Bari, Thomas Turner et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Work and Organization•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 13

With greater flexibility and control over the timing and conditions of work, solo self‐employment (without employees) is seen as offering a potential solution to work‐family conflict. This study examines whether this flexibility manifests itself in gendered trends among the self‐employed as self‐employed women undertake a larger share of unpaid domestic and caring work compared to their male and wage‐and‐salaried counterparts. The findings are ba…

  • Behaviour under the condition of anonymity

    Andreas Schneider, Tom Turner•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2017

Analysing photographs of abandoned hotel rooms, we forensically classify hotel guests who left their rooms into three ideal types. Goffman’s idea of impression management is central for indicating ideal-type specific behavioural motivations. Under the condition of relative anonymity provided in hotel rooms, the audience for which guests manage impressions is either absent or the guests themselves who construct it. In the case of an audience to be…

  • Why Are Irish Attitudes to Immigrants Among the Most Liberal in Europe

    Open Access•Thomas Turner, Tom Turner•ARTICLE•European Societies•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 3

There has been a dramatic inflow of immigrants into Ireland in recent years. Yet recent European Social Surveys indicate that Irish attitudes towards immigrants are among the most liberal in Europe. We test the association between a number of economic and cultural measures and attitudes to immigrants at the aggregate national level. Although Ireland fits the expected association and in the predicted direction the most notable feature of our resul…
