Characteristics and Circumstances of Adolescents Obtaining Abortions in the United States
The purpose of this study is to describe the sociodemographic and situational circumstances of adolescents obtaining abortion in the United States prior to the Dobbs decision. We use data from the Guttmacher Institute's 2021-2022 Abortion Patient Survey, a cross-sectional survey of 6698 respondents; our analytic sample includes 633 adolescents (<20 years), 2152 young adults (20-24 years), and 3913 adults (25+ years). We conducted bivariate analys…
Medicaid's role in alleviating some of the financial burden of abortion: Findings from the 2021–2022 Abortion Patient Survey
When state Medicaid funds cover abortion, it substantially reduces the financial burden of care. Moreover, it may increase access for groups historically marginalized within the health care system
Characteristics of abortion patients in protected and restricted states accessing clinic‐based care 12 months prior to the elimination of the federal constitutional right to abortion in the United Sta…
Prior to June 2022, abortion patients in restricted states encountered more situational and financial barriers compared to those in protected states. These barriers have undoubtedly been exacerbated by abortion bans
Abortion incidence and service availability in the United States, 2020
This study did not address factors behind the increase in abortion. However, this report demonstrates that the need for abortion care was growing just prior to the overturning Roe v. Wade, and the impact of this decision will be even more far-reaching than previously expected
Telehealth for Contraceptive Care During the Covid-19 Pandemic: Results of a 2021 National Survey

METHODS: We used secondary data from the Abortion Patient Survey, the American Community Survey, and the National Survey of Family Growth to estimate abortion rates. We used information from the Abortion Patient Survey to estimate the lifetime incidence of abortion. RESULTS: Between 2008 and 2014, the abortion rate declined 25%, fr…
Denial of Abortion Because of Provider Gestational Age Limits in the United States
OBJECTIVES: We examined the factors influencing delay in seeking abortion and the outcomes for women denied abortion care because of gestational age limits at abortion facilities. METHODS: We compared women who presented for abortion care who were under the facilities' gestational age limits and received an abortion (n = 452) with those who were just over the gestational age limits and were denied an abortion (n = 231) at 30 US facilities. We des…
Covid ‐19 Abortion Bans and Their Implications for Public Health
The American Public Health Association (APHA) has long recognized that access to abortion is a fundamental right and an important component of comprehensive sexual and reproductive health care.1 However, under the guise of trying to protect the U.S. public during the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of states have called this right into question. Some politicians have attempted to exploit the current public health crisis to further prohibit or limit a…

Are Uncertain Fertility Intentions a Temporary or Long-term Outlook? Findings from a Panel Study
Using panel data to examine pregnancy attitudes over time
There is a lack of research examining changes in women’s fertility attitudes over relatively short periods of time. The aim of this study was to determine whether and how women’s attempts to get pregnant and their desire to avoid pregnancy changed over six months’ time as well as which characteristics and circumstances were associated with these changes. Using multinomial regression, we analyzed two panels of data from a sample of approximately 3…
Abortion, Demography of: United States
Enhancing care homes with assistive video technology for distributed caregiving
Using Longitudinal Data to Understand Changes In Consistent Contraceptive Use
These findings build on prior research suggesting that pregnancy avoidance attitudes are an important motivator for contraceptive use. It is critical to recognize that the context in which many women make decisions about pregnancy and contraceptive use changes over relatively short periods of time
Secondary Measures of Access to Abortion Services in the United States, 2011 and 2012: Gestational Age Limits, Cost, and Harassment
Abortion Incidence and Service Availability In the United States, 2011
The national abortion rate has resumed its decline, and no evidence was found that the overall drop in abortion incidence was related to the decrease in providers or to restrictions implemented between 2008 and 2011
At What Cost? Payment for Abortion Care by U.S. Women
Changes in Abortion Rates Between 2000 and 2008 and Lifetime Incidence of Abortion

METHODS: We combined secondary data from several sources, including the 2008 Abortion Patient Survey, the Current Population Surveys for 2008 and 2009, and the 2006-2008 National Survey of Family Growth, to estimate abortion rates by subgroup and lifetime incidence…
Perceived and Insurance-Related Barriers to the Provision of Contraceptive Services in U.S. Abortion Care Settings
Underreporting of Induced and Spontaneous Abortion in the United States: An Analysis of the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth
Underreporting of induced abortions in surveys is widespread, both in countries where the procedure is illegal or highly restricted and in those where it is legal. In this study, we find that fewer than one half of induced abortions performed in the United States in 1997–2001 (47 percent) were reported by women during face‐to‐face interviews in the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG). Hispanic and black women and those with low income we…

The Culture of Poverty and African-American Culture: An Empirical Assessment
This study examines whether (1) impoverished persons exhibit a 'culture of poverty' mentality and (2) blacks differ from whites in their attitudes toward employment, family values, and welfare. Overall we find little evidence that poor individuals adhere to different value systems than do nonpoor individuals. In addition, we do not find strong evidence of a coherent 'black culture,' as reflected in attitudes. However, regardless of poverty status…

I Would Want to Give My Child, Like, Everything in the World: How Issues of Motherhood Influence Women Who Have Abortions
The majority of U.S. women who have abortions (61%) have children. This exploratory study analyzes qualitative information from 38 women obtaining abortions to examine how issues of motherhood influenced their decisions to terminate their pregnancies. Women in the sample had abortions because of the material responsibilities of motherhood, such as the care for their existing children, as well as the more abstract expectations of parenting, such a…
Online Place and Person-Making: Matters of the Heart and Self-Expression
In recent years, there has been a substantial take up in social software, but other than translating the vocabulary and arranging suitable payment facilities, little or no account is taken of cultural sense-making in the global deployment of these systems. We report on two studies of social software, an online dating site and a social network blog. We show that people need 'places' because it is only there persons can meaningfully be (re)presente…

Confidential Reproductive Health Services for Minors: The Potential Impact of Mandated Parental Involvement for Contraception
CONTEXT: Recent legislative efforts to implement mandated parental involvement for minor adolescents seeking family planning services threaten the rights of adolescents younger than 18 to access reproductive health care. METHODS: State and federal laws and policies pertaining to minor adolescents' rights to access services for contraception and sexually transmitted diseases are reviewed, and research examining issues of parental involvement among…
Female Victim Perceptions of the Causes of Male Spouse Abuse
Victims of spouse abuse were interviewed concerning their views of why their husbands were abusive. It was hypothesized that by concentrating on one specific characteristic of this kind previously undocumented patterns of response would be elicited from the subjects. It was concluded that the women's reasons for the violence perpetrated by their spouses serve as justification for the abusers'actions and legitimize maintenance of the relationship
