This paper examines the process of land commodification in the commercialization of agriculture and housing in Turkey. Specific mechanisms involved include cadastre modernization, land titling, land registration and land-consolidation schemes. Through these techniques, the state increases its control over common-public lands, reconfigures land-use and access patterns, and deepens commodification. The paper traces historical variation in land use …

  • Supermarket Expansion in Turkey

    Open Access•Yildiz Atasoy, Yıldız Atasoy•ARTICLE•Journal of Agrarian Change•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 34

This paper examines the shifting relations of food provisioning in Turkey as small producers are increasingly integrated into commercialized agri-food supply chains led by supermarkets. There are two sides to this process: …

  • Governing women's morality

    Open Access•Yildiz Atasoy, Yıldız Atasoy•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2006•Cited by: 9•References: 8

The veiling of Muslim women is subject to strongly contested ideas about whether the veil is a symbol of women's subordination to an oppressive tradition or a means of emancipation from that tradition. This article suggests that women's own personal reasons for veiling must be analysed. Data collected from published documents from Muslim organizations allows for demonstration that the veil is configured as central to an Islamic moral code of fema…

  • Global Shaping and Its Alternatives

Yıldız Atasoy, Yildiz Atasoy et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Global Shaping and Its Alternatives•2003

Global Shaping and its Alternatives offers a unique series of reflections on the connections between market capitalism, the politics of alternatives, and the cultural elaboration of social change. It argues that there is a need for an alternative explanatory framework on globalization - one that rejects fatalism and highlights the dynamic roles of states, NGOs, local fractions of capital, democrative movements and gendered social relations. Witho…

  • Muslim Organizations in Canada

    Yildiz Atasoy, Yıldız Atasoy•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•2003•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This article examines the Muslim shaping of gender ideology around the veiling practices of immigrant Muslim women in Canada. Women's veiling is often attributed to the mobilization of traditional values against the universalizing influences of Western culture. This is also a common theme in mainstream sociological studies that conceptualize cultural politics as being split between the global and authentically local. However, the veiling practice…
