  • If not work, then what?”: Work, ambition, and satisfaction among young women in urban India

    Divya Vaid•ARTICLE•South Asian History and Culture•2024•References: 11

This paper explores aspirations among the youth in India by seeing connections to two themes – ambition and satisfaction. While aspirations can call on a range of values, what is it that drives people as they deal with aspirations? Is dissatisfaction a driver of ambition, or a hurdle for future progress? How does one look at ambition and satisfaction in the larger field of aspirations as sociological phenomena? Using macro-data to establish a bro…

Manisha Priyam, Mona G Mehta et al.•ARTICLE•South Asian History and Culture•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Rapid urbanisation and demographic transition have significant implications for India, making it one of the largest urban agglomerations and youngest nations in the world. Each of these involves complex and multilayered changes, specially with neo-liberal transformations leaving their impact on youth lives, aspirations, and culture. While the 'urban' remains the site for realising youth aspirations, neo-liberal transformations of this space are suc…

    Open Access•Divya Vaid•ARTICLE•Studies in Indian Politics•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This article studies the relation between class and electoral participation. While the relation between political participation and many demographic variables such as caste, gender, age and location has been well researched in India, the same is not the case for the relation between class and electoral participation. Multiple measures of class (income, asset-wealth, occupation and education) are explored and conceptualized in this article, follow…

  • Uneven Odds: Social Mobility in Contemporary India

    Divya Vaid•BOOK•Uneven Odds•2018

Focussing on patterns of intergenerational stability, this book traces the unequal structures of opportunity in India. The author addresses questions and approaches towards social mobility (or the lack thereof) through interactions between social class, caste, and gender while adopting a rural–urban perspective, capturing changes over time, and the implications of social mobility on a national scale. This book plugs in crucial gaps in the researc…

  • Patterns of social mobility and the role of education in India

    Divya Vaid•ARTICLE•Contemporary South Asia•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 20

This paper investigates the role played by education as a mediator of inter-generational social mobility in India. It uses a nationally representative data set (the National Election Study 2009) to describe and establish patterns of social mobility in India, and subsequently, to establish the role played by education with regard to this mobility. In particular, it attempts to test the ‘merit’ argument by analysing whether the effect of social ori…

  • Caste in Contemporary India: Flexibility and Persistence

    Divya Vaid•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sociology•2014•Cited by: 50•References: 35

The caste system, its salient characteristics, and its subtle and more obvious transformations, coupled with its persistence and pervasiveness, have been central to studies of Indian society. This review provides a specific view of caste and its transformations with an emphasis on the socioeconomic or labor market dimension. Such a perspective is particularly crucial as one of the distinctive features of caste is the inheritance of occupations. A…

  • The Caste-Class Association in India

    Divya Vaid•ARTICLE•Asian Survey•2012•Cited by: 7

This paper empirically analyzes the association between caste and class in India. I find a tentative congruence between castes and classes at the extremes of the caste system and a slight weakening in this association over time. Although Scheduled Castes have low upward mobility, higher castes are not entirely protected from downward mobility
