  • Gilbert of Penn (Staffordshire) and His Will of 1260

    John Hunt•ARTICLE•Midland History•2021

Although historians have become increasingly cautious in the interpretation of their contents as historical sources, wills remain an attractive entrée to many aspects of medieval life and society. However, such documents are rare before the later fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and therefore the survival of a testament dating to September 1260, from Lower Penn in Staffordshire, is worthy of wider notice. The nature and context of the document…

This instrumental case study reviews the 1994-2004 period of state financial oversight in East St. Louis, Illinois School District 189, with a secondary review of the initial years of NCLB implementation. Although the oversight panel’s fiscal management did generate financial stability, case findings indicate that its accountability processes did not result in sustained improvements in student achievement indicators despite anticipated links betw…

  • A figure sculpture at Upton Bishop, Herefordshire: Continuity and revival in early medieval sculpture

    Open Access•John Hunt•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•2009•References: 11

In the nineteenth century, a red sandstone figural carving was located in the south-facing chancel wall of the church of St John the Baptist, Upton Bishop, near Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire. In 2005, following the removal of the stone for recording and conservation, the author was invited to examine and report on the sculpture, and particularly to review the proposal that the sculpture, rather than being of Roman date as had traditionally been su…

Since Jonathan Kozol's 1991 publication of Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools, East St. Louis, Illinois, District 189 has endured unswerving criticism and study. While Kozol's work made publicly known the horrible conditions of schools in the district, it did not bring immediate relief. In 1994, the state appointed a financial oversight panel to review the work of the local school board and to begin work on the district's budgetar…

  • Sculpture, Dates and Patrons: Dating the Herefordshire School of Sculpture

    Open Access•John Hunt•ARTICLE•The Antiquaries Journal•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 22

The origins of the Herefordshire School of Sculpture have traditionally been associated with Shobdon Priory, although both Leominster Priory and Kilpeck Church have also been suggested. This paper proposes that the origins of the Herefordshire School should be sought elsewhere, most probably in Hereford Cathedral. Recent studies tend to date the activity of the Herefordshire School earlier than was previously supposed, but it is here argued that …

  • Overcoming the challenges to consumer involvement in cancer research

Open Access•Tony Stevens, David Wilde et al.•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2003

Introduction Within the last decade, there have been many government initiatives to promote consumer involvement in research, especially in cancer. At the same time, the number and influence of consumer groups themselves have expanded. However, the organizational infrastructure necessary to facilitate consumer involvement has not been developed. Consequently, consumer involvement has tended to remain essentially localized and project driven, with…

  • The effects of repeated copying and recording media on intelligibility

Gea de Jong, Paul Newis et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Speech…•2002

The increasing use of MiniDisc technology for audio harvesting by law enforcement agencies gives some cause for concern. The reasons for its use are understandable: the kit is small, cheap, light and easy to use. However, there are disadvantages when compared to some of the existing technologies, due to the use of bit reduction techniques. In order to demonstrate the potential problems associated with MiniDisc technology, a two-factor design expe…

Within the building and grounds of the Bell Inn, Alveley (Shropshire) there is preserved a group of sculptures, the style of which is unmistakably that of the Herefordshire School. Thought to derive from a 12th-century church in Alveley, the group is the product of at least two hands and includes zoomorphic interlace and other interlace, together with figural scenes of ‘Samson and the Lion’, ‘St Michael and a Serpent’, and a ‘Man in Foliage’.
