  • Winter-to-summer transition of Arctic sea ice breakup and floe size distribution in the Beaufort Sea

Open Access•Byongjun Hwang, Jeremy Wilkinson et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2017

Breakup of the near-continuous winter sea ice into discrete summer ice floes is an important transition that dictates the evolution and fate of the marginal ice zone (MIZ) of the Arctic Ocean. During the winter of 2014, more than 50 autonomous drifting buoys were deployed in four separate clusters on the sea ice in the Beaufort Sea, as part of the Office of Naval Research MIZ program. These systems measured the ocean-ice-atmosphere properties at …

  • Ice and ocean velocity in the Arctic marginal ice zone: Ice roughness and momentum transfer

    Open Access•Sylvia T Cole, John M Toole et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2017

The interplay between sea ice concentration, sea ice roughness, ocean stratification, and momentum transfer to the ice and ocean is subject to seasonal and decadal variations that are crucial to understanding the present and future air-ice-ocean system in the Arctic. In this study, continuous observations in the Canada Basin from March through December 2014 were used to investigate spatial differences and temporal changes in under-ice roughness a…

James Thomson, Brian Jenkins et al.•BOOK•Three years after•2005

  • Regional Unemployment Disparities in Australia

Robert Dixon, David Shepherd et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2001•Cited by: 5•References: 4

In this paper we examine the nature of disparities in regional (state) unemployment rates in Australia over the period 1978-99 and their relationship to the national unemployment rate. Using co-integration analysis, we find that there is a negative relationship between the two implying that, as the national unemployment rate falls, micro and/or differentiated labour market policies need to bite harder (and affect proportionately more people) if e…

  • Community Mediation Centers: Humanistic Alternatives to the Court System, a Pilot Study

Open Access•Karen Grover Duffy, James A Thomson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Humanistic Psychology•1992•References: 12

We introduce the concept of community mediation centers as alternatives to the traditional, adversarial, and less humanistic court system. We make the case that mediation is indeed a humanistic dispute resolution process by first describing the benefits of the process and then by sharing results of a study we conducted using archival cases from an actual mediation center. The study examines the disputing person's Maslowian levels both before and …

    Open Access•James Thomson•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Royal Society…•1884

There is no distinction known to men among states of existence of a body which can give reason for any one state being regarded as a state of absolute rest in space, and any other being regarded as a state of uniform rectilinear motion. Men have no means of knowing, nor even of imagining, any one length rather than any other, as being the distance between the place occupied by the centre of a ball at present, and the place that was occupied by th…

  • The City of Dreadful Night

James C Thomson, James Thomson•BOOK•The city of dreadful night•1880

In this haunting poem from the latter part of the nineteenth century, Scots-born writer James Thomson anticipated the modern age's nightmare vision of the city as a place of loneliness, alienation and spiritual despair. In contrast to the late Victorian confidence all around him, Thomson dared to face the possibility that the universe was utterly indifferent to human affairs. The strange and dark images in The City of Dreadful Night have become a…
