  • Quṭb al-Dīn al-Shīrāzī’s Textual Map of the Mediterranean Sea (1282) and Its Evident Source in a Portolan Chart

    Fateme Savadi, Tony Campbell•ARTICLE•Imago Mundi•2023

In 1282, the Persian scholar, Quṭb al-Dīn al-Shīrāzī (d. 1311), included in a cosmographical work a description of a ‘Greek’ map of the Mediterranean. Rather than reproducing this map graphically, he placed a square grid over the image, listed the cells covered by the sea, and then itemised the toponyms according to their cell numbers. Once this pixelated map is created as he instructed, it is obvious that the ‘Greek’ map must have been an Italia…

  • The Psychological Uses of Ruthlessness in a Children's Fantasy Tale

Judith P Robertson, Eugenia Gritziotis et al.•ARTICLE•Changing English•2000

Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Peter Rabbit (1902) is one of the top best-selling children's books of all time. In an attempt to account for its staggering success, this paper examines the dynamic processes through which meaning shapes itself out of fictional constructs. A study of Potter's tale presents insights into the psychic logic of the author's intentions and her uses of narrative to give order through form to desire. Drawing on the work of …

    Tony Campbell•ARTICLE•Imago Mundi•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The unfinished Egerton MS 1513 in the British Library offers insights into the drafting technique of sixteenth‐century French chartmakers, which included taking extracts from large models drawn at different scales. As the last and most imaginative of the surviving Dieppe School works, Egerton 1513 also displays a more elaborate southern continent than any found elsewhere. That its place names, and those for the west coast of North America, are im…
