From Marx to Brussels: Agriculture and landscape in twenty-first-century Europe
The transition from Marxism to a Western dominated market economy in Central and Eastern Europe since 1990 has had far-reaching effects on the rural economy and landscapes of the region. This paper examines the impact of the changes. The accession to the European Union in 2005 of eight former Communist states and how they are being integrated into the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is given added relevance for two reasons. First, the CAP is a l…

Private property restitution: The geographical consequences of official government policies in Central and Eastern Europe
The restitution of private property has been a widespread and controversial part of the post‐socialist transformation in Central and Eastern Europe, raising issues about social justice and the responsibilities of national governments for the actions of their predecessors. This paper reviews the implementation of the restitution process in the countries of the region and assesses the impact on the social and economic landscape. The policy has been…

Settlement of Property Claims in Former East Germany
The reunification of Germany on 3 October 1990 was a political milestone for Europe (Harris 1991; Murphy 1991). It marked not only the end of an era dominated by two German states with radically different political and economic philosophies but also the end of the wider divisions of the cold war. In many ways the dismantling of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent official reunification initiated a rewriting of the geography of central Europe. Cont…

Barristers and the Growth of Local Justice in England and Wales
The putative emergence of local legal cultures poses important questions both for the geography of law and for access to justice which have been affected by the unprecedented changes in the legal system of England and Wales since the early 1970s. There have been large increases in public funding through the Legal Aid Scheme and the Crown Prosecution Service, a rapid growth in the numbers of practising lawyers and decentralization of many of the h…

Citizens Advice Bureaux: Problems of an Emerging Service in Rural Areas
Nineteen eighty nine marked the Golden Jubilee of the CABx in the UK. Over the past 50 years it has established itself nationally as the prime provider of generalist advice, but there are special problems associated with delivering the service in rural areas. These include: the logistical difficulties of serving remote communities with small and scattered populations; maintaining the independence of bureau, especially from the local authorities t…

The Distribution of Solicitors in England and Wales
After a consideration of the relative paucity of studies of legal services provision, this paper identifies the difficulties to be found in using the Solicitors' Directory as a source for mapping the distribution of solicitors in England and Wales, and goes on to consider the number of persons per solicitor at regional, county and district levels. Changes in the distribution of solicitors between 1971 and 1985 are assessed and, using a standard '…

A Comment on 'Charging for Countryside Recreation: A Review with Implications for Scotland
In their recent article on charging for countryside recreation,' J. D. McCallum and J. G. L. Adams raised some important issues for the future of rural land management in the United Kingdom, but in my view their proposals for charging for access to open country are more or less irrelevant in the context of Britain. Not only would charging prove administratively unworkable, it would also command little if any public support, because it flies in th…

Landscape Evaluation in Practice: The Case of South-East Devon
Landscape evaluation has been a statutory duty for both local and central government since the 1947 Town and Country Planning Act and the 1949 National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act came into force, yet there are few agreed procedures for making such evaluations. Although many techniques have been devised, in the main they have not been subjected to sufficiently rigorous and repeated testing for them to be considered truly reliable. In …
