Historians and sociologists have argued that the practices of confession played a major role in the transition to modern, introspective individuality. Until the 1970s, tough, the literature had dealt mostly with Protestantism and Protestant modes of confession, first and foremost the practice of writing spiritual diaries and then reading and rereading them. The article looks at Catholic confessional practices and how they, too, have shaped modern…

From the later Middle Ages throughout the early modern period, the biblical injunction to “test the spirits” became the subject of an increasing number of treatises and practical case studies. The phrase was understood as an imperative to verify whether the preternatural abilities claimed by some individuals—chiefly women—derived from a divine, or rather from a demonic, spiritual origin. Efforts to locate spirits within the body, to map their int…

  • Enchanted Europe

    Moshe Sluhovsky•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2012

The history of superstitious beliefs, as Euan Cameron states provocatively but accurately in the introduction to this masterful survey of the history of superstition, cannot be written. Superstitious beliefs and practices are a disorganised bundle of traditions, some local and some global; some have their origins in folklore and others in Christian practices, some are particular and idiosyncratic acts while others are elements of a developed and …

  • Calvinist Miracles and the Concept of the Miraculous in Sixteenth-Century Huguenot Thought

    Moshe Sluhovsky•ARTICLE•Renaissance and Reformation•2009

This paper is a study of French Calvinism as a language. It was a language which employed the signifiers and the signs of the traditional Christian culture. In an attempt to follow one such word (“miracle”: miracula or mirabilia), a large number of texts are examined, including Calvin’s …

    Moshe Sluhovsky•ARTICLE•Rethinking History•2000•References: 1

Queen Marguerite de Valois of France (1533-1615) is among the most vilified characters in French history. Accused of incest, corruption, insatiable sexual desire, murders, treason, and direct responsibility for the political disintegration of France in the Sixteenth Century, her image has never stopped intriguing historians. The historical Marguerite, however, is overshadowed by the popular heroine of Alexandre Dumas's novel Queen Margot (1945). …
