  • The Little Ice Age

    Jean M Grove•BOOK•Little Ice Age•2012

The evidence for the Little Ice Age, the most important fluctuation in global climate in historical times, is most dramatically represented by the advance of mountain glaciers in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and their retreat since about 1850. The effects on the landscape and the daily life of people have been particularly apparent in Norway and the Alps. This major book places an extensive body of material relating to Europe, in the f…

  • Mid-Holocene glacial activity in the Pyrenees

    Open Access•Anne F Gellatly, Jean M Grove et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1992•Referencias: 2

Radiocarbon dating of sediments from a bog at c. 2100 m in the Cirque de Troumouse provides the first reliable dating of Holocene glacier fluctuations in the Pyrenees. The oldest organic material in the bog provides a maximum date (5190 ± 90 BP) for moraines immediately downvalley, which are either Lateglacial or, more probably, Holocene in age. Bracketing dates on laminated glacioacustrine sediments in the bog indicate a Neoglacial event between…

  • Glacier Fluctuations and Hazards

    Jean M Grove•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•1987•Citada por: 2

discussion of the types of hazards associated with climatically led oscillations in populated areas and their timing. The threat from such glaciers has diminished but not disappeared with the recession of the last century. The impact of the more dramatic oscillations of surging glaciers and those with floating tongues has been limited by their restricted spatial distribution. Increased penetration of economic development into hitherto remote moun…

  • The Little Ice Age in the Massif of Mont Blanc

    Jean M Grove•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Institute of…•1966•Citada por: 6

CLIMATIC FLUCTUATIONS in Europe, since medieval times, have had some interesting geographical consequences, especially in mountain areas.1 The history of glacial behaviour is one of the main lines of evidence available for their investigation. As accumulation and ablation vary, so glaciers must advance and retreat. But the response of a glacier to a particular climatic oscillation depends not only upon the nature and duration of the meteorologica…
