Curious about Nature
Notwithstanding the importance of modern technology, fieldwork remains vital, not least through helping to inspire and educate the next generation. Fieldwork has the ingredients of intellectual curiosity, passion, rigour and engagement with the outdoor world - to name just a few. You may be simply noting what you see around you, making detailed records, or carrying out an experiment; all of this and much more amounts to fieldwork. Being curious, …

Participatory scenario development for environmental management
A methodological framework is proposed for participatory scenario development on the basis of evidence from the literature, and is tested and refined through the development of scenarios for the future of UK uplands. The paper uses a review of previous work to justify a framework based around the following steps: i) define context and establish whether there is a basis for stakeholder engagement in scenario development; ii) systematically identif…
Farming for Water Quality
Widespread pollution of groundwater by nutrients is an externality of modern intensive agriculture. Rising nitrate concentrations in freshwater have been of concern throughout the developed world for several decades. Initial worries focused on human health but more recently nitrate's role in eutrophication has also become a cause for concern. Because the impact on water quality often comes decades after land use change, the challenge for science …

A practical exercise to demonstrate the variable source area model
A practical exercise is described which allows students to measure the spatial variation of runoff production within a low‐order drainage basin. Dilution gauging techniques are used to measure stream discharge. These discharge data may then be used to provide evidence of the spatial pattern of sediment and solute delivery within the basin. A full description and evaluation of the practical is provided. Details of the gauging measurements are give…
Stimulation from simulation? A teaching model of hillslope hydrology for use on microcomputers
The design and use of a simple computer model which simulates aspects of hillslope hydrology is described in a teaching context. The model shows how a relatively complex environmental system can be constructed on the basis of simple but realistic theory, thus allowing the student to simulate the hydrological response of real hillslopes. Initial runs allow the student to explore how the system operates; at this stage the model can serve as an impo…

Spatial variations in rainfall and stream water quality around the Avonmouth industrial Complex
Rainfall and stream water quality were investigated in the area surrounding the Avonmouth industrial complex. The specific conductivity values of the rainwater were significantly higher downwind of the complex during single storms. The long‐term effect of this change in rainfall quality is to produce a marked increase in stream water solute levels to the north‐east of Avonmouth
Art. XX.—Register of Temperature of the Air from the 6th of June to the 6th of July 1833, in a Choppered Tent, cooled by Tatties, at Kurrim Khan, thirty-six miles above Kalpí, on the river Jumna
In order to know the hourly alternations of heat, during the hottest part of the year, in a tent in the Mufassil, or Upper Country, of the Bengal Presidency, I kept a register in the months of June and July; and the accompanying is the result, shewing the hourly differences; likewise the average heat during the month, which was less than 88°, or not a higher temperature than that of a bungalow, or brick habitation, at Cawnpore at that season. How…
