A Vegetation Map of Tasmania
A RECENT review of the plant geography of Tasmania' has pointed, among other things, to the lack of an adequate vegetation map of the island. The only attempt has been that of Stephens2 in 1941; it is incidental to a survey of the soils, and the boundaries are highly generalized. Representation of the vegetation cover in atlases is often misleading. At least two well-known atlases indicate extensive areas of deciduous forest, and the more usual p…
Aim and Method in Zoogeography
A NIMAL geography is perhaps the branch of geography least practiced by geographers, and the one they most cheerfully abandon to the systematic scientist. In part, this situation is probably deliberate zoogeography is usually considered too specialized and too remote from the central problems of human geography. In part, it may be due to historical accident-zoogeography was a discipline cultivated by zoologists even before the days of Humboldt an…

Human and Animal Ecology
The Pinnipedia
S TUDIES that seek to explain the present distribution of animal forms must draw on a wide and varied field of evidence. Some of the evidence, notably that provided by the paleontologists, is direct and generally capable of reliable interpretation; but rarely, except for some groups of land mammals, is the fossil evidence sufficient. More commonly, paleontology can provide only the framework, perhaps one or two major clues, or even just a tiny pi…
