From multidisciplinary participation to interdisciplinary interaction: A multicomponent bibliometric case study of sustainable development studies
It is almost a truism to state that interdisciplinary research and collaboration are essential to finding solutions to pressing societal and global challenges. To address the complex threats to harmony between the environment and socio-economic development, academic endeavours need to prioritise an interdisciplinary approach that involves natural, social, and human sciences. The extent of interdisciplinary work in sustainable development studies …
In the frontier zone of market transition: Economic possibilities across the market/non-market divide
This paper engages with two important approaches theorising the co-existence and even close entanglement between the market and non-market to rethink the making of actually existing market economies. The first, that is, the diverse/community economies approach, underscores alternative relations and ethics to capitalism but often views community economies as external to market processes. A second approach on market frontiers rejects the idea of th…
Violence Against North Korean Refugee Women: Doubly Victimized By Repatriation and Premigration Traumatic Experiences
This study investigates the influence of traumatic events on the mental health of North Korean refugee women by examining the prevalence and severity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety in comparison with their male counterparts (women = 496; men = 131). Our results suggest that women are at greater risk of developing mental health problems than men. In particular, symptoms of PTSD and anxiety were higher among women …
An Ethnographic Study on the Indonesian Immigrant Community and its Islamic Radicalization in South Korea
Contrary to popular belief, South Korea is not immune from the growth of Islamic radicalism. Although no serious terrorist attack has yet occurred within the country, some worrisome incidents have been reported. Recently, an Indonesian man was arrested on the grounds that he publicly supported the Al Nusra Front, a known Al Qaeda–affiliated terrorist organization, and even attempted to depart for Syria to join the organization. The current study …

Terrorist Hostage-Taking and Kidnapping: Using Script Theory to Predict the Fate of a Hostage
This study examines whether there is a consistent pattern in terrorist hostage-taking and kidnapping. Script theory, developed in the discipline of cognitive psychology, explains that human behavior, whether brutal or benevolent, typically has a certain pattern to it because every human is programmed to some extent by learned experience; this experience, or script, can determine how an individual [hostage-taker/kidnapper] will respond to a partic…
What Works? Countermeasures to Terrorism: A Case Study of PKK
What works? This can be the ultimate question in the war on terrorism. How can we reduce and hopefully eliminate this type of human suffering? A good many ideas or suggestions are available; however, we are still uncertain what counter terrorism measures or tactics do indeed work. By using the case study method, this paper attempts to answer this question. The Turkish government has long struggled against PKK terrorism and has adopted several dif…

Ethnonationalism, ethnic nationalism, and mini-nationalism: A comparison of Connor, Smith and Snyder
Some terms have been coined to highlight the important relation between nationalism and ethnicity. However, there has been much confusion as to the meaning of such concepts as 'ethnonationalism', 'ethnic nationalism' and 'mini-nationalism'. This article compares the three terms, as used respectively in the works of Walker Connor, Anthony Smith and Louis Snyder. These scholars are selected not only because of their well-respected position in the s…
